Lubes containing glycerin

Contributor: Checkmate Checkmate
Okay, I'll admit it - we are somewhat uneducated when it comes to ingredients found in most lubes. I guess the one I am most concerned about is glycerin. For some of the EF members this seems to be a questionable, or possibly unsafe ingredient.
We have used lubes in the past which contain glycerin, and to the best of my knowledge, have had little or no problems with them. Having said that, however, my wife is somewhat prone to UTIs. Having had trouble with them prior to using lubes, we have never made a connection with the infections and lube we are using.
So my question is - does glycerin, or any other ingredient make a female more subject to getting infections? Thanks for your input.

It can (how's that for a clear answer?)

Glycerin is a sugar alcohol. If you taste it it will taste sweet. It comes roughly from the same family of compounds as sorbitol, mannitol, and other sugar alcohols, and while we can't digest it there are some beasties that can. If you're susceptible to problems and put a glycerin containing lube in your vagina it can become food for the bugs.

If you don't have a problem then glycerin has some very good points that cause it to be used in lube. It holds on to water well, and helps to make the lube long-lasting and slick. In that way it's similar to other lube ingredients such as parabens - if you don't have a problem they're great, but if you do they can be a very bad thing.

I get yeast infections with lubes that contain glycerin so yeah, its basically bad news.

Sapphirexice & ScottA:

Thanks for your replys. We have used lubes containing glyerin in the past with no known problems, so hopefully we are okay with it.

You might want to check the wikipedia article for some more information. I learned more from this article when I looked it up just now, though.

Personally, I don't use glycerin lubes because glycerin soaps make my skin feel weird and I expect my vaginal tissues to be even sissier than my arms and hands (I hate being sensitive to fragrances et al. ). But if your wife hasn't had any problems, she probably will continue to be fine.

From a personal standpoint, I find that using glycerin lube often leads to a yeast infection for me and after switching to lube without them has made a huge difference. I've seen this become a much bigger topic in some communities and relatively unknown in others. I happen to discuss this with my doctor a few months ago and she didn't particularly see that it would make much of a difference - but if it was working for me she told me to just continue to do what was working.

I don't know if there just haven't been enough concrete evidence of anything out there or if it just hasn't hit the right channels yet. I think for some women glycerin can certainly be a problem.

I've read that a lot of members do not like glycerin, I have not had any trouble with it at all.

I have some that contain that, although I have not had a UTI after reading this I think I will just stick to liquid silk

I have never had any infections at all and I use to use glycerin lubes vaginally.
I'm not concerned at all with glycerin. What concerns me are the parabens!
