Reusing The Bottles?

Contributor: Envy Envy
I'm curious, after a lube runs out, how many of you reuse the bottles for other lubes or the like? I tossed my lube that was turning yellow (see other thread I made about it) and cleaned it out real well with hot soapy water, rubbing alcohol, etc, and am letting it dry. I have some powdered lube and was thinking of mixing up a batch and putting it in the bottle. Think that is safe to do?

What do you guys do with your empty lube bottles?

I didn't even know there were lubes you could mix up yourself. Just goes to show how much of a newbie I am.

To answer your question, some potential concerns I would have would be to make sure the inside of the bottle is clean. You don't want any bacteria potentially growing in your new lube. If it's possible, you may want to sterilize the bottle, although this may be overkill. The other concern would be if there are potentially any ingredient reactions between the lube and the bottle. Hope that helps.

I have not had a bottle that was worth reusing, but I plan on doing it when my Maximus runs out, I love pump tops.

I do not see any problems as long as you got it good and clean. (sounds like you did) I have cleaned and reused those Lysol automatic soap dispenser deals for lube with no problems.

Yes, I have Elypse Art Cinnalube and I plan on purchasing some JLube at some point.... The EA lube comes with a bottle, yes, but it's so... flimsy and the top is, I dunno, just odd to me.

Or you can get a big lube bottle and put it into a more convenient small bottle.

Keep in mind that J-Lube doesn't have preservatives so things can grow in it. Same active ingredients as Probe.

Yeah, i heard about that. I also heard with some people who made batches of it, putting it in the fridge helped keep it longer, or just making sure it was in an airtight bottle and sealed well.

I throw the empty ones out. Although I will keep the cute lil bottle I got with my powdered lube.

You could try a bit and see what happens. I would be worried that something about the bottle made the original lube yellow.

It'd be unlikely. Most bottle plastics are chosen because they don't react with most bottle contents. Toss the bottle if you notice changes in the plastic (color change, brittleness, etc.) but otherwise it's probably OK. The lube could have turned yellow for many reasons - sun exposure, a delayed reaction, etc.

Yeah. The bottle is fine, it was the lube itself that went. I bet it just got tainted with bacteria somehow, hence me cleaning it several times and even using rubbing alcohol.

Alcohol should kill most bacteria. I wonder what kind of shelf life plastic bottles have. I reuse water bottles sometimes but I've been told it's only ok to do that for a short time before icky chemicals start leeching into your drinking water. COulod possibly be the same for lube...

I've never reused a bottle...but that's because I have so much lube I have never gotten to the bottom of ANY bottle. lol
