what's so great about it and what makes it so different?

Silicone lube tends to be very slippery and lasts a lot longer than water-based lube. It can be used in the shower, bath, or pool because it doesn't wash off too quickly.
There's some downsides, though. It can stain sheets, is a little hard to wash off when you're done if you don't feel like letting it go away on its own. If toys are involved, it generally shouldn't be used with toys made of silicone (or any materials containing silicone) without at least doing a patch test ahead of time.

It's wonderful with glass or metal toys. Just a couple of drops is enough to coat it, and it slides right in. It's also good for anal because it doesn't need to be reapplied. IF you patch test your silicone toys first, you'll usually find it's safe for them as well. (But ALWAYS patch test, with every bottle of silicone lube you use against every toy, as different formulas can react.) My only complaint about silicone lube is that it's so liquidy. I like my lube about the consistency of lotion, which usually means hybrid lubes. (And always patch test those too!)

I recently "discovered" silicone lubes. I love how they don't get sticky like the water-based.
They also come in different consistencies, which I've found to be kinda useful.
