Cutting, trimming, or otherwise modifying toys

Contributor: Valyn Valyn
I know I've mentioned it, and I've seen others write about doing it on the forums and in reviews: have you ever modified a toy somehow?

Can you even do that? Is it safe to? I've had toys with annoying parts, or that have been a little too big to use for extended periods of time, so I was wondering what everyone else has done.

If you have done it, how did you do it? Did the toy make it through the surgery? How long did it last after you modified it? Were there any weird issues after? Would it have just been better to throw out that toy and keep up the search for the perfect one?

I know Beautiful Dreamer has shaved a seam off of at least one toy... I don't remember which one though.

I've broken a plastic toy to try and use it a different way, but it didn't really work. That's all I've done.

I've modified a couple of toys. Silicone is hard to work with, blades tend to "chatter" across it rather than cut smoothly, but if you're careful you can shave a seam off using a razor. I wouldn't try too much, though, otherwise the toy will get rough.

Hard materials can be modified with a chisel, file, rasp, or sandpaper pretty safely, provided that the toy is solid.

I think Dame Demi was the one to cut the nubs off of the Snugglepuss..

Personally, I wouldn't trust my "skills" in that department. LOL

After reading that review, I did the same to some annoying nubs on a cock ring, and it went pretty well. It was jelly, so we only had it for a little while after that anyway, but it held up pretty well, no strange changes.

Other than that, all I've done is pinch extra holes in leather pieces and sew fabric and elastic, either as repairs or alterations. I haven't needed to yet; anything that I might have altered had too many other issues to save, lol.

I've never modified any toys, but I have thought about it.

Hmm, I wouldn't have thought of that, about silicone toys. I do have one silicone plug that I've thought of trimming, just so it is more comfortable for longer wear- I wouldn't be modifying any part that would be inserted though.

Would it even be safe to do that? To modify a part that would be inserted?

I've modified two toys of mine. One was a cheap "strap-on" that shouldn't really have been classified as such. I cut off the strap part, and on the base of the toy where it flared out I attached two suction cups to make it more versatile. This was one of the most enjoyable modifications I've made.

The other toy I modified was a prostrate massager/vibrating cock ring. My partner liked the feel of the cock ring when I was using it but the massager went unused. Since they were attached with separate cords to the same controller, I cut the cord on the prostrate massager and just taped over the nub left with electrical tape. Problem of the unused portion solved!

These aren't necessarily in line with some heavier modifications such as shaving, but they are still a few tweaks that me and my partner have made to make toys more enjoyable.

I have cut the "wings" off of the flange of a silicone butt plug to make it more comfortable, but it did end up with rougher edges than I would like.
I have also drilled out the base of three dildos to allow for insertion of a bullet vibrator or the Tantus suction cup accessory. Two of the three ended up with a small hole on the side which was not good. The third one came out pretty good.

Oh, I've never altered the insertable portion of a toy. I considered cutting the tips off of the Diva, but decided against it and figured out how to make it work so my partner liked it.

I think as long as you think about what you are doing, and consider the material and how the cut is going to affect the 'structural integrity', it should be fine to make slight modifications, cuts, and trims.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I'm still a little wary about doing it, though. Hmm.. guess we'll just have to see if it really needs it..

I got a g spot vibe that was for poor quality. And the locking mech. that turns it on off and opens broke/stripped. So I took the batt. out and glued it shut. It's nice wand now.

I think it would be "safe", since silicone is the same all the way through and nonporous, but the cut bits would be much less comfortable.

Some realistic toys have little 'tag' like bits that hang off them if the material was done in layers. I've trimmed some of these off multiple times, if you use really sharp scissors, it changes the texture to a smooth one. Of course, I prefer the realistic texture.. so I don't make a hobby of it.

After continually trying for several months, and getting nowhere with it, I attempted to modify an aneros MGX ( link ) that I had. The angle of the toy just wasn't right for my anatomy, and wasn't hitting my prostate at all. After discussing it at length on the aneros forums, several people suggested that they had had better luck with it after modifying the angle on the portion of the toy that get's inserted. The problem is that it was sort of a trial and error type of modification, in that after each small change, I had to try the toy again to see if it made the difference. The first two changes went well, and the angle was a little better, but by the time I tried to alter it for the third or fourth time, the material wouldn't take it anymore, and really started getting brittle and falling apart. I've still wanted to try one of the other aneros models to see if it would be any better for me, but it's hard when there's so many other great toys out there I haven't even tried yet, and had not so great of an experience with the first aneros that I tried.

I've been searching for a realistic squirting dildo, but have not come across any suitable. I am tempted to 'modify' a cyberskin dildo I already own. I thought about putting a needle (sewing needle) through the tip to the base and simply use very thin rubber tube. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Considering the difficulty in cleaning cyberskin products but I figure I can just run the same cleaner through the made hole as is used on the outside.

Cyberskin has a much, much thicker and tougher inner core. A needle would likely become lost unless you had the very long sort..

I have the Pipedream Light Up Lover. It's a rabbit style vibe only the rabbit is actually hummingbird shaped. The long beak-like protrusion was extrememly pokey and very uncomfortable, especially at high speeds - it felt more like a stinger! I bit the end of the beak off haha! It's better now! )

I've cut holes for bullets in slicone toys. You need very fine scalpels or X acto knives.

I had a egg tickler once, that the tickler was a little too long for me, felt more funny than pleasurable, so I cut it down a bit. I liked it tons better after the little modification.

I've modified several toys; like SilverVixen I've trimmed the beak off of the hummingbird clit vibe portion of the Decadent Indulgence - because my wife found it too intense. I will say that we now have an Ultimate Decadent Indulgence and we've left the hummingbird beak in place - I just have to be careful when using it.

I've added a stiff-wire to a couple floppier jelly dildos - it worked to make them stiffer and therefore more useful.

I have also connected a more powerful battery pack to a vibe by splicing some wires!

We recently received a Snugglepuss for review from one of our affiliate companies... For those unfamiliar, it's listed on Eden's as well.

The little nubs are just a horrible idea. I have yet to use a toy with these that she enjoyed. I shaved them off. The toy was still sub-standard. I had such high hopes for it too. =(

Just a few mods. My two faves are/were a matched pair of jelly vibes that the motors died on. These were 2-2-1/4 thick and 9" long, I'd bought them at a local sex shop. The first I just cored out and stuffed a smaller smooth vibe in, interesting sensation if you do it while using it, esp if you work up to larger sizes. The other one's jelly fill soon cracked and fragmented and I was left with a thin cockform sheath that I slid over the other modded dong, but soon put an inflatable butt plug in. I find butt plugs boring, but what happened was the inflated plug and gooey lube sealed the sheath and as the plug inflated it compressed the trapped air ahead of it. I ended up with a dildo that started out at just over 2-1/4 and fully inflated was 3-1/4+ and 10+ long, but with some give. Unfortunately, there was a thin spot and it eventually popped I may try to patch it, just lay a big piece of saran wrap in stuck down w/ lube. Or electrician's tape.

I notice sun spectrum lights and contact with other odd plastics or strong soaps may change the color and de-elastisize some dongs causing cracks.
