Do you try to avoid toxic ingredients in your sex products and/or in other, non-sexual products?

Contributor: spiced spiced
I avoid a lot of common ingredients found in many sex products and other, non-sexual products--parabens, phtalates, glycerin (to name just three among dozens)--and sometimes I wonder if I'm just being paranoid.

And then I see this article from last Sunday's NY Times and I'm reminded of the old saying: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you". It seems like every week, I learn of another serious health hazard. Although it does get tiresome, I'm going to keep avoiding things like phtalates, because I like being healthy.

It's actually pretty easy to avoid most toxic ingredients on EF; each product's ingredients are listed and Edenites aren't shy about sharing their concerns and experiences. Outside of the sex product world, however, it can be tricky. Most items with "fragrance", for example, contain phtalates, and everyday items like store receipts can contain crazy levels of BPA.

How about you? Do you try to be aware of, and avoid, toxic ingredients in sex toys (and other sexual products like lubricants)? How about in other, non-sexual products?

I don't bother. What I don't know won't hurt me, right?

I try to stay with silicone toys and organic lubes and other edibles.

I try, especially with toys and things that will have a lot of contact with sensitive areas.

ABSOLUTELY. That's a HUGE concern for me personally, and my partner.

When it comes to something going in or on my body I try to keep with safe materials. All my toys are glass or silicone

I am especially careful with sex toys. There's just too much junk out there.

I try to be more aware of potential toxins that would get in my body via lubes and toys.

Yeah, me too. Sometimes it's hard to know where to draw the line; there's really nothing more important in life than health. I just read the label and if there's any doubt, I don't buy it.

Absolutely true. It seems like every week, I discover something else.

Not sure what it's like in Oz, but it infuriates me that in the USA, things are often approved with very little, or even zero, testing (if the maker makes the claim that their new thing is similar enough to something already approved).

I'd prefer we used the precautionary principle instead, where something has to be pretty much proven safe before it's approved.

I'm really aware of it. Putting things on your sensitive bits is as bad as eating it. Your regular skin protects you, but it's different on mucous membranes.

I choose safe toy materials but don't avoid parabens in lubes.

I do! I buy silicone or plastic toys, water based organic lube, all natural toxic chemical free makeup, cleansers, and shampoos. I even clean my house with a non toxic and organic cleaner.

If I had less free time and extra cash to spend on these things, I may make different decisions, but I feel good about the extra steps I have been taking to keep my body as healthy and clean as possible!

^^Exactly!

I have always had to be vigilant about what touches or goes into my body because of allergies & crazy sensitivities in general. It may seem like a pain, but it's habit now & I believe I have benefited in the long run from not exposing myself to so many potentially nasty chemicals.
