Silicone Vs PVC

Contributor: pleasurehunter pleasurehunter 12/07/2011

I have used silicone quite a bit and love the feel of it, i was wondering how it compared to another material which seems to be highly used that I dont have much experience with: PVC, which do you prefer and why

I prefer Silicone because of the safety factor. It rates a 10 on the safety scale. PVC is basically Jelly, so the safety rating is like 2 or 3. You can't sterilize it, it leeches chemicals, and it usually has a terrible smell.

Silicone, because PVC is, in a word, rubbish. Silicone is body safe, sterilizable, and can last for a very, very long time. PVC degrades, is porous, and is potentially toxic.

Silicone wins! Safe, sterilizable, can be shared, many different textures and densities. In a word - amazing. PVC? Not so much. It is cheaper, but I'd use a condom with it just to be safe.

I associate PVC with clothing, not insertable objects. I'll echo the safety factor, but I personally like the feel of it more than I like PVC.

No contest. Silicone is the gold standard.

There are cases in which I will compromise and deal with lesser quality materials (certain elastomers, for instence). Not all toys are meant to last forever. But PVC can leech chemicals and just plain smell bad. No thank you.

Don't bother trying to get the PVC experience. Smelly toys, melting toys, toys you can't clean, unknown chemicals...

Stick with silicone for softies.

Yeah, I have a couple PVC plugs that I bought about 6 months ago. The things have degraded to the point where one crushes about an inch before you hit solid material. And yeah...they reek.

Silicone may be safer, but I can't use my favorite warming lube with it, as it's a synergy brand. =C I don't give a damn about the 'safety' or 'porous' toys, I'm the only one using them.

PVC, Poly Vinyl Chloride, has been linked to several kinds of cancers as it is used in Vinyl siding. I won't buy a toy going a whole lot closer to my body!

Silicone is safer but if your like me and dont really care because its not like your eating the item for dinner or going to put it inside you and keep it there forever or a long period of time it really isnt going to cause you instant harm. either works for me. If price is a factor silicone is usually more expensive but it will last longer as well.

PVC smells awful and is bad for the environment, both during the manufacturing process and once it's lying around the landfill giving cancer to rats. It can't be sterilized, and the chemicals it leeches are unhealthy.

"no instant harm" is not the same as safe. With modern science detecting harm in small amounts of things that were considered "too small to matter" (mercury, arsenic and lead hit headlines the most, but organics are in there too) it's not worth the risk. Get silicone.
