If in doubt, use a condom! From the little bit of research I was able to dig up on it, glow-in-the-dark properties are created by phosphors. I think in this particular application they are directly mixed into the base material so I would recommend using a condom with them if I were to write a review on them. I'm so paranoid about that kind of stuff though, so I'm less likely to roll the dice than your average user of toys.

I would definitely use a condom over any glow in the dark toys. the chemicals that they use are supposed to be non toxic but I still wouldn't trust anything that glows especially if its a soft material.

Way back when glow-in-the-dark materials were produced with such lovely substances as radium that were actually radioactive (and therefore most certainly harmful). Modern glow-in-the-dark substances are all phosphorescent so they don't pose any danger of radiation, but I'm not sure how the substances themselves are from a strict material safety standpoint. I would guess that in general they are pretty safely encapsulated by whatever material they are embedded in (silicone/rubber/plast ic/etc), but I can't offer any more than that!

Most of the recent glow in the dark toys I've seen use a PVC base. PVC is pretty porous, so I'd use a condom anyway. Otherwise, I think they're fine.

This is a great question I have never thought of before.

As far as I know, silicone glow-in-the-dark toys are perfectly safe. Don't know how it effects other materials, though.

When I asked about the glow of the Tentacle, Whipspider responded, "[We use] a very small amount of pure glo pigment which is non-toxic and becomes completely inert once cured into the silicone."
I don't know if this is true of every company, but at least you don't need to worry about Whipspider toys.

I would not have thought of this before, great question. Good to know Whipspider's glow in the dark toys are safe.
