What do phthalates actually do to you? And is it common to find them in toys that don't explicitly say "phthalates free"?

Check this link out, it will give you the ins and outs.
Animal studies have linked phthalates exposure to kidney, liver, and male reproductive problems.
Phthalates are VERY common in sex toys.

The majority of your jelly, jel-ee, aquagel, crystalessence materials will contain phthalates....some don't you just have to check the properties tab of the item itself.
Glass, wood, stainless steel, hard plastic, ceramic are a few that do not contain phthalates. I hope this helps you some! =)

I didn't even think to look around material guides and stuff. All these links are really helpful.
