My wife uses a body shaper fairly frequently to help smooth out the bumps and it works quite well. She does not use one designed as a butt lifter.

I think that if you find one made for your shape and body type it works really well, but that they aren't 'one size fits all.' It's certainly something that a LOT of people wear!
