I recently bought the We Vibe 2 and have yet to try it. It comes with nine settings. My wife is not particularly vocal about how I use toys on her (I know... I need to work on it). My inclination is just to put the toy on the highest vibrating speed. However, there are some nice options on the we vibe 2 in addition to just speed and pulse, etc. There is an option "9" where the toy very slowly cycles through a slow to high speed.

What do most of the women on here prefer?

On the toys that offer it (several do now, my favorite of them being the Siena Rondo) is the escalation pattern you're describing where it starts out slow and accelerates toward a high speed over and over again. I also tend to like pattens that alternate high and low vibrations.

Option 9 sounds great! I like vibration patterns but with toys that have multiple speeds and no patterns, I like to start out with a gentler vibration then turn it up as things heat up!
