Sterlizing via dishwasher or boiling

Contributor: Adriana Ravenlust Adriana Ravenlust
I'm curious as to how many people do this? Sterilizing has never been a big priority of mine so I simply use the liquid soap method..

I must admit, the idea of boiling or using the dishwasher kind of "icks" me out, especially if it's been used for anal! Do you just use the same pot you would use for cooking? Or do you have a special container for only sex toys?

I know, after the cleaning, that the dishwasher isn't going to be any worse for wear but just the idea.. isn't very pleasant for me.

Maybe I'm the only one?

I don't actually use these methods for sterilization - I like the 10% bleach solution instead.
Problem is with all the little ones running around I don't know when a good time to get the toys out for these techniques would be.
If I were to consider these options, I would probably go with dishwasher before I went to boiling.

I boil mine, and yes I have a different pot that I use only for that. Usually I boil them right after we're done with them. Right after sex my husband is passed out asleep and I still need a cool down period, and that's what I use that time for, to boil!

I don't use the dishwasher for mine because I am afraid I would get used to it, and just forget about it. I would die if I opened a dishwasher full of sex toys when company was over!

I am looking at purchasing a new toy that can't be boiled though, so I'll be using the 10% bleach solution for it, and who knows I may even switch to that instead of boiling. The thing I don't like about boiling is that is takes 10 minutes for the water to boil, then 3 minutes for the toy, then I have to cool it and dry before I can put it away.

I would actually recommend the boiling or 10% bleach for anal toys before the dishwasher method because, some diswasher do not have the "sanatize" option. If you boil, it really wouldn't matter what "pot" you used if you washed the toy off first. All you would be doing then is insuring all the bacteria were killed so, any bacteria in the pot or on the toy would be dead. If you feel more comfortable, just run the pot through the diswasher before you use it again. Just keep in mind it is very important to steralize anal toys especially if you plan on sharing them. Even if you are sharing them with your partner because everyones bacteria is different!

I don't have a dishwasher, but I wouldn't put sex toys in it if I did... I usually wash with soap and water first, and boil as needed for sterilization. By the time a sex toy of mine gets into a pot of boiling water, it looks clean already- it's really just safety precaution.
I boil another water-only pot afterwards, to clean out the pot well.

In terms of boiling, yeah, I use a pot that is also used for food. I just clean the toy with soap and water before boiling it. Then, obviously, put the pot in the dishwasher.
