How do you increase you sperm count?

Contributor: Yoda Yoda
In the past year or so, my wife and I have been trying to get pregnant with no luck so far. We haven't yet been to a doctor but have been trying out various methods of increasing our chances like taking natural supplements, using a basal thermometer, as well as countless other tricks of our own. I'm not sure at this point if either of us have a biological problem or if we've simply not yet hit the jackpot, but I was curious if anyone has any tips on how I in particular can up the chances on my end, and increase my sperm count and motility.

We had trouble getting pregnant (have 3 now but all 4 years apart) and hubby did the usual gamut of tests. Dr. told him to avoid hot baths, hot tubs, etc..

Not sure if changing other habits can help (smoking, nutrition) if that applies to you, but it wouldn't hurt!

Good luck!

I'm not a smoker or heavy drinker. From what I've been told, a healthy lifestyle is the best thing for sperm...no heavy drinking, drugs, smoking, caffeine, and plenty of rest and exercise. Also, I take plenty of zinc and multivitamins. I'm not sure if they really help though. There seems to be almost too many rumors out there.

For a while weren't they saying "avoid tight, hot clothing in the genital area" or something like that? Don't know if it's still recommended, but I've heard people who were having problems a while ago saying that they were told to switch to loose boxers and pants that weren't too warm.

I've heard this a lot too, so I think it is probably sound advice.

YOur best bet would be to go to a clinic and get checked out. Sometimes the problem is such a simple fix like a hormone supplement. It's not always thousands of dollars. It's better to know what's wrong then to worry endlessly. If there is nothing wrong then simply relaxing will help.

We're not necessarily sure if something is 'wrong' quite yet. As far as we can tell we're both quite healthy. But I guess it doesn't hurt to get things checked out, just for the peace of mind.

I too have heard that you shouldn't wear whitey-tighties. Wear VERY loose clothing and, at home, even go naked if you can. Of course, check with your doctor too.

In the summer, I try and sleep naked. I've heard that too much heat is bad for the sperm. That's why the scrotum can loosen or tighten to bring the testicles farther or closer to the body's own heat. It's like built in air conditioning.

As mentioned above, you can use the rhythm method to predict the most fertile time for your wife. I believe you should ideally avoid sex until when she is most fertile. Excessive sex can deplete your sperm count. Also, when she is fertile, I think it's recommended to have sex every other day to maximize your chance for pregnancy.

And yes, tightie whities are discouraged for the exact reason you gave. Sperm has an ideal temperature, thus why the scrotum relaxes and contracts at different temperatures. Excessive heat will damage sperm. Therefore, avoid hot tubs/hot baths, saunas, etc.

A healthy lifestyle will also help. Eat well, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, maintain a good body weight, and exercise.

Be careful with supplements. Make sure any you are taking are both safe and do not have a deleterious effect on sperm count. Also check any prescription meds you may be on. I believe zinc supplements can be helpful.

Bottom line, talk to your doctor. There are a lot of factors that may be affecting your chances.

Good luck!

Turns out that the sperm count is high, but motility is low...bummer.

True. Also avoid keeping cell phone in your pants. They are bad for sperm count and mobility.

I have also heard this just recently, and I think it makes a lot of sense. There is just too much we don't know about cell phones.
