How to know what is the problem

Contributor: sry sry
I take meds lots of med and the kind i take are well known for causing sexual problems... but how do you know if it's the meds not a physical or psychological problem causing me to loose my erection after a 5 mins? had this problem for as long as i can remember. and I don't remember a time before i started taking meds

-I don't wake up with erections ever
-Nor do I get a random erection during the day that I can't explain. I use to get them all the time in middle school but I haven't noticed this for years.
- I only get 5 erection a week and that is when I look at porn, I thought you were supposed to get like 5 a day just randomly...
-also I was sexually abused..

I'm worried something is wrong.. and am wondering if there is anything I can do to figure out if its me (physically or mentally) or the meds causing this problem.. next time I see my dr I'm going to bring it up.. and demand a change in my meds to something without sexual side effects.. BC this problem has been going on for too long...

how do you tell the difference from these if its possible

meds
psychological
physical

I dunno if it makes a difference but my dad drinks a lot and drank when he passed his sperm to my mom so could this have an effect on me too? BC i know excessive drinking can cause this problem for the person whos drinking..

is there some kind of test a doctor can do to isolate my problem bc I think it might be a combo here..

any help is appreciated thanks!

You were going through puberty in middle school, correct? It's really not that common, I don't think, to "randomly" get erections throughout the day. I know my boyfriend doesn't.

As for all your other questions, I don't know, and only a doctor can tell you what is going on.

A good friend of mine's partner and herself always mention that he's "Superman" because he gets 6-8 erections throughout a 12 hour day, and he's pushing 50, and isn't on any medication whatsoever, so age can surprise us, I've noticed. :p

I once read that you can tell if it's psychological versus physical by putting a paper ring around your cock before bed - if it's broken in the morning, you've had a night erection and that suggests the issue is not physical but psychological. You might want to repeat that a few times to be sure, I would imagine tossing and turning might also snap the paper ring.

Go talk to your doc about it tho - and if you feel like your doctor isn't considering your problem seriously, get a second opinion! Sex positivity and negativity even extends to doctors offices...

Good luck!

I would definitely agree that it is probably a combination of factors that are causing you to have erectile issues, certainly psychology can play a big role, but medications no doubt interfere with the body's normal functions. I would definitely go to your doctor, many medications have alternatives that may not cause sexual side-effects (not always the case, but a possibility), you might also want to see a mental health clinic to get some therapy sessions if a change in medication does not fix the issue.

I think the paper trick if it really works would confirm you get erections at night but it doesn't provide evidence for psychological problems. I mean how is a broken piece of paper getting at your psychological state.

Usually men get 6-8 erections during their sleep during the REM (restless eye movement) period of sleep. Women actually have the same type of arousal as well except it isn't visible. I know that anti-depressors reduce libido but other than that I know pretty much nothing on that. As others have mentioned it could be either or a combination of both. Check with your doctor to see if the medication you take has tendency to decrease libido and discuss with them if they have an alternative medication that will not later your libido as much.

I think that if the medications have absolutely no relation to decreasing libido (and that in the history of testing that medication not one instance has this issue ocured)

....then you could envisage evaluating the issue as a psychological one.

Not sure what all meds you are on but they can definitely affect you. TALK TO YOUR DR. about the meds and your concerns. It may be something that the dr. can change or reduce or stop to see if it is the problem. Also, combinations of meds can cause terrific changes with you!

Sounds like you have a lot of factors in the game here so please seek professional help. That is nothing wrong with asking for help! The professionals are the only ones who can really tell you what is going on with you and provide the help you need..

Good luck!!
