I have a general distrust of Shrinks. I'd much rather talk to a close friend (if I have something to talk about) then to a perfect stranger who is costing an arm and a leg.

I was but I fired him when his only answer was to medicate me until I was 'compliant'...he made the mistake of telling my husband that was his goal. he no longer works in this town...

He really didn't help me and going to him made me an "unacceptable" donor for plasma (about $250/month I was out)
So ummmm insanity is passed in our blood??? When did this discovery come to light? That could be what happened....I caught this need to see a therapist from a blood transfusion! For fuck's sweet sake they are supposed to screen every donation for everything harmful anyway. Sheesh.

I voted no because I took this to mean are we seeing a shrink 'now'. I have seen psychologists twice in the past for my PTSD but haven't had to in years.

I've never seen a shrink, but I've thought about it. I used to take antidepressants.

Been there, done that. I prefer talking to a trusted friend or thinking it through myself. I trust my own judgment....but then again I'm a psych major and I counsel quite a bit since people come to me for help....

Also, I really hate the term shrink. I feel it's borderline calling someone a quack...

I do, on and off, as I find it good for my mental health and it's also pretty common in my profession. Always good to get some (ideally) unbiased professional perspective, even if one doesn't always agree with the opinion provided.

No, I've been on meds but they didn't really help. I'm looking into something called neurofeedback now.

So on xanax and and antidepressant for anxiety attacks. Over 60% of the population has some sort of chemical imbalance. Everyone is fucking nuts in my book though.

I've been to one when my parents were getting divorced and I just sat and didn't talk, I had to see another against my will in high school, and I started seeing another one 5 or 6 years ago for depression. She tried to help me with my depression, ADD, and even my low sex drive. I liked that she thought outside the box too. She brought up ADD medications and I told her what ones I had taken and what I didn't like about each of them and while she would bring up Ritalin every now and then (because it usually only lasts a few hours at a time) she helped me decide on a different medication. Unfortunately the medication we went with hadn't been approved for what we were using it for (a medication used to help keep narcoleptics awake but also had been used successfully for treating both ADD and depression) and it was rather expensive, so the insurance company tried to stop covering it. It was great for a few years, and the dosage changed a bunch of times, then I stopped taking it because it didn't seem like it was doing anything anymore. My depression is a lot better now than it was then, and I mostly have problems with the ADD now. I've been considering getting a prescription for Ritalin so that I can have the option to really crack down and focus when I need to, but not lose the ability to eat for 15 hours at a time.

I think I was fifteen or sixteen when my mother shuffled me into a family counselor. Evidently, my mother had been talking to this woman for weeks before it was suggested I come in for a session.

Within in the first five minutes the woman called me a liar and I got up and walked out, never to return. While I believe there's a valuable service in an occupation like this, I've heard too many horror stories about psychologists and therapists who ignored signs their patients were getting better and/or worse.

Not currently but I suggest everyone were to see a counselor at the least once in their life.

Well, I WANT to be a psychiatrist ('shrink') so that probably means that I'm slightly unstable myself!

the nice thing about psychiatrists and psychologists is that they're trained professionals that went through school for 8-12 years so that they can give the appropriate advice and direction. also, if you go through insurance, it can be quite affordable.

I hate meds and I hate shrinks. Ive done both on and off for 10 years. Im bipolar and have a hard time with anxiety. Both run heavily through both sides of my family for many generations. I stopped taking my meds again for maybe the billionth time a few months ago. Let me tell you it is very hard at times. I just hate filling my body with that garbage. It helps one thing and makes 7 other things bad. Ive tried well over 10 different kinds, and I just cant do it anymore. I dont have specific triggers for what sets me off but Ive improved vastly on talking myself down from full on attacks. I havent been to the emergency room screaming how I am going to die or have a heart attack in about a year. (the pain is very real and intense when i get panick attacks) i feel ive taken a small step but also large. You just take it a day at a time and really focus on remembering itll be ok and pass.

It's interesting to think that bipolar disorder is technically a terminal ilness.

I haven't, but I probably should... I have self-diagnosed social anxiety as seasonal affective disorder. Thing is, I'm not looking forward to opening to a complete stranger. I rather just talk to my girlfriend and work through the SAD a day at a time.
