Can cold sores really turn into herpes?

Contributor: SecretToyMan SecretToyMan
I have always had cold sores since I was a young teen. I was a virgin too, until I met my wife. So I believe I got them from a girl I kissed or my mother. I'm voting for my mother! Anyway, can they really turn into herpes? My wife never let's us have oral if I have a cold sore and I just wasn't aware that this was possible I guess.

Well, coldsores ARE herpes. There are a multitude of herpes viruses like chickenpox and shingles.

HSV1 is cold sores. We just don't want to say herpes. HSV2 is genital warts. Yes, they can spread. It is possible, so it's safe not to put that cold sore near any mucous membranes.

I have to object to everyone who says cold sores ARE herpes. Yes, most are but not all of them.

I get cold sore type blisters, I have had them tested and they are not herpes. It has been proven that any time I eat or drink anything with a high acid content (oranges, grape fruit, lemons....) I break out. Its an allergic reaction because that is where the citric acid touches first. For me it is a genetic disorder that was passed down from my mothers side of the family.

You can truly find out by getting tested when you have a breakout.

Technically, that's not a cold sore. It's a type of breakout called hives; yours just resemble cold sores. This is one reason why doctors have to run tests; you can't assume anything because the human body doesn't always react to stimuli as expected.

RE original post: Herpes type 1 (which is usually what causes the cold sores on the face) is not always caused by sexual or intimate contact. Most people in the United States have it by the time they're 20 because it spreads extremely easily. You can actually catch it from sharing a towel or plate of food with an infected person. If you perform oral sex during a breakout, you could give your partner Herpes 1 on their genitals. It is safe for her to perform oral sex unless you have ever had lesions in your genital region.

All the same, next time you have that type of sore, go to your doctor and have them test it. It could be Herpes 1 (Herpes 2/genital herpes of the mouth is possible but not as common on the face), an allergic reaction with painful hives that look like Herpes lesions, or an entirely different latent infection that keeps recurring and causing lesions. Best to have it tested so you know for sure what's causing it.

You are correct except for Maybe just a typo or brain fart, but HSV2 is genital herpes. HPV is genital warts.

I think you meant to say that HSV2 is genital herpes. HPV (human papillomavirus) is Genital warts.

OP - The best source for information is the CDC - herpes facts.

LOL that's the same thing I said to him. I said "Babe just Google it..." His mother just can't admit her herpes and always called it that.

I would go to the doc and have it tested. I have a lover that has cold sores (probably oral herpes) and no oral when he has a breakout. We will have him tested as soon as we can get him covered by insurance.

Technically cold sores are herpes, just a different kind. It's not the STD kind. I'm not entirely sure but i don't think it can turn into the sexually transmitted kind.

HSV2 is not genital warts. It is genital herpes...it's just like cold sores, but in a more embarrassing place. Warts are caused by HPV.
