To be honest it's really never too early though it can certainly be too late! Just be sure to keep the discussions age appropriate and answer any questions matter of factly and completely again according to the maturity level of your child. For instance a young child can be told babies come from Mommy....and older child might be told the general process of chidbirth and possibly watch a discovery channel show about the subject and a teen can have the whole process expained in detail.

Using safer sex practices should begin with where it is appropriate to touch someone else or be touched by someone else and end up with proper condom usage and when it is time to visit a doctor for a sexual health checkup.
Like I said it's never too early!

They will learn from friends, TV or the internet so the earlier the better, at least they will hear it right from the parent.

Play it by ear? I'd think starting in Jr. High would be a good idea.

We will be talking in a generalization as soon as our boys are ready for kindergarten. We think it is important to know somethings and we want them to know no one touches you there.
From experience if someone would of talked about it sooner to me, maybe I would of said something sooner about my sexual abuse. Instead I had no idea and it went on for a really long time. We are talking to our kids soon.
We also plan to do the same thing with drugs. We want them to know what it looks like and everything. That way if anyone shows these kinds of things to them, they know to come get us. Just read about in the news that a elementary school kid brought in his mothers crack pipe for show and tell. Told the class this is what my mommy smokes out of to get all crazy.

I know I got the 'talk' in 5th grade....I'm playing it by ear (And not looking forward to it....but that's life) And will go from there..Kids are maturing so fast these days it's crazy. My cousins daughter is in 3rd grade and started her period already.....So I think the talk is better early than late.
