Many of us have heard these saying before and may have even believed them before we knew better. In fact, some people still believe these folk wisdoms even though all of the above are false.
Virgins are always clean.
You can be born with STDs. Also, not all STDs come from sex. more on that in a bit,
You can't catch STDs if you have only had sex with the one you lost your virginity to.
See the part about virgins.
If they look clean, they are clean.
Not all STDs have obvious symptoms. Some can go into "hiding" but still be transmitted. Herpes is the most famous for this, but HIV, AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, HPV and more can all have hidden or no symptoms.
If they say they've been tested, they have been tested.
People will say anything to get into your pants. This means they can lie because they think they're clean and don't need to be tested due to other things on the list.
STIs only come from sex or needle drugs.
Some STDs can be caught nonsexually. Hepatitis can come from undercooked meat, wearing pants that are too tight can cause vaginosis and sharing dildos can spread illness. There are more where that came from, too! The risk of catching an STI nonsexually without drug use is low, but it does happen.
It's very possible to be born with an STI as well. Since not all of them have symptoms and not all parents get tested, it's impossible to know unless you get tested.
Smokers have a special danger: if the mouthpiece burns the lips at all blood can get on their pipe. If said pipe is shared, you can catch blood borne diseases. Crack and meth users have this problem frequently.
All STDs have symptoms.
Not all STDs have symptoms all the time. See "If they look clean" for more.
Being part of an awareness group is as good as being tested.
Only testing is a substitute for testing. All people, clean or not, can be in awareness groups.

I've never believed any of these. There's also "you can't catch anything with a condom" or "you can't catch anything from [insert sex act]."
06/17/2012
I never fell for any of these things that people told me. I used to get so mad at my friends when they'd say this stuff
06/17/2012
None of them!

I've never believed any of them.
06/17/2012
never believed any of them myself
06/17/2012
None of these are true. Virgins can still pick up things from drug use or at birth.
06/17/2012
Virgins are typically always clean, but not always.
06/17/2012
Nope, nurse's son, so I got all kinds of fun information

No, actually I didn't ever believe any of those. My parent taught me the truth before I ever had time to question them. I believe knowledge is power, I like to know as much as possible about anything that may concern my health!

All of those are patently false. None of them are true. You can't determine whether or not someone has an STI or an STD, unless you're the clinician running the tests. Most STI/STD tests for women cannot be performed on men.

And here I thought STI's were just infections..
06/18/2012
non of these...

"Virgins are always clean." NO. What if he or she used IV drugs? How do you know for sure the person is a virgin? What if they got an STD through oral or anal sex and are just "technical" virgins? What if the person has Type I Herpes? (about 80-99% of the population has it by the age of 50) It could quite easily transfer to the genitals via oral sex. Also, even virgins can get Tricamonis or BV.
I have no idea how being part of a "Group" can protect you from STDs.
I don't believe any of these myths.

When I was younger, based on all of the pictures they showed in health class, I thought all STDs showed up as gross body-eating infections.

False. Just because the hymen hasn't been torn does not mean they are clean. Anal sex and oral sex can spread STD's
-You can't catch STD's if you have only had sex with the one you lost your virginity to.
False. Just because your a virgin does not mean that the other person is as well.
-If they look clean they are clean.
False. People can shower and look clean however there are STD's that don't wash off. People have died because they thought that way. Look at the early 80's.
-If they say they have been tested, they have been tested.
False. People are able to lie. If you are told this ask for the test results and verify it. Test results can be forged.
-STI's only come from sex or needle drugs.
False. I was close to someone who caught HIV from their spouse by cleaning the sores on their spouse body. She had never done drugs or had sex with an infected person.
-All STD's have symptoms.
False. HPV has no signs or symptoms in men however they can spread it.
-Being part of an awareness group is as good as being tested.
False. Being tested is as good as being tested. Many people are part of awareness groups who are sick. The group does not test your blood or do pap smears. Only health care professionals do.

I was posting all the "old wives tales" about sex I could think of. I don't know how I missed those, especially as one of my friends actually said both to me recently. It's interesting and a little worrisome that people still believe such things these days.
Nice catch.
06/19/2012
never believe in any
06/19/2012
Nope. I can understand how people make some of those mistakes - like the virginity one - but a lot of them just seem plain ridiculous to me. The only way to be absolutely sure is to be tested and make sure your partners are tested. And since STDs can actually be acquired in ways other than sex, it's important to get tested regularly even if you only have one partner.
06/27/2012
in actuality none. but i chose the most likely.
07/02/2012
I'm a long-time health clinic volunteer, so none of these.
07/03/2012
All false.
07/03/2012
To all those??? I claim *faceplam*!!!!!
I cannot get over how people think these things. It was one of the first things I remember being taught by my mother the nurse. "Just because someone says they are clean... don't beleive them" I think she was trying to talk about a doctor or a teacher or someone but it was still a good lesson!!!
