Anyone ever had their period go away due to stress?

Contributor: SimpleHedonist SimpleHedonist
I have always been regular with my cycle, with no female probs my whole life. About 3 months ago, I started missing periods.... haven't had one since. I have had several pregnancy tests and am NOT preggo. I called the doctor yesterday, and he asked me a bunch of questions including if I have been under excessive stress. The answer to that one was a BIG yes. He told me not to worry, that excessive stress can stop you from ovulating and make your period temporarily go away. I am going in for a routine exam, but he seems positive it is just stress.

Has this happened to anyone else???

I have missed one period due to stress, but not 3 in a row. How is your nutrition? sometimes that is a factor too.

No, and I'm a VERY high stress person. I take multiple meds to manage my anxiety and stress levels. Somehow it's never managed to make me miss cycles, though I've wondered why sometimes. I don't have them often anymore now due to my birth control, so it's a non-issue at this point.

Seconding Taylor on the nutrition aspect. That can mess with cycles in a big way.

I have a friend who at one point *stayed on* her period for a month due to stress. It can most definitely affect things.

I haven't skipped a period because of stress, but it's definitely messed with my cycle. The one time I remember distinctly it shortened the time between periods a lot and made it much heavier (my periods are usually pretty light). When I asked my doctor about it he said it was just stress, and it's 3+ years later and I'm totally fine, and my cycle's back to normal

I have missed periods due to stress. But once the stressful job situation was resolved my cycle went back to normal.

yes. I started having mine skip i went 3 months with out having one then i had one and went two more with out one. I went to the dr and they told me i was eating to many carbs. And put me on a diet which i did not follow....but i looked at what was going on in my life and realized it was stress related. When I get super stressed i skip every so often but then it goes back to normal.

Glad I am not the only one!!!! Getting a few tests just be safe, but I am taking this as a signal to get the stressful stuff fixed!!!

Nutrition is good, a am a total foodie, so that doesn't look to be the problem.... thanks for the thought though!!!!

I've had both versions. Having a long period due to stress and having no period due to stress.

okay get this- i am a recovering addict and yes addiction is VERY stressfull, no of course i'm not saying that you are anything like i was but......5 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mostly due to my low weight- I'm 5'6 1/2" tall 150lbs, but I was around 102-112 when i was on speed i missed it for around 2 years (96-97)till i reached about 118-125 and went on birth control had it again for a couple of years(98-2000) then got addicted to coke and lost it again for 5 whole years (till 2006). im 35 and want to be a mom soooo bad and i keep hoping (ridiculously) that that might mean that i saved some eggs but i highly doubt it. you'll be fine. mines been back for 6 years and im grateful everytime i have it

Yes, that's happened to me before. Make sure you eat well and drink plenty of water. Do whatever you can to alleviate stress.

If so, it's been so long that I don't remember because I've not had actual periods (besides very, very light ones) in about 7 years. I have had a full period for a few days randomly, but it's rare. I still get all the horrible symptoms like mad, but not an actual menstrual cycle. I have endometriosis and am on an injection to help prevent the endometrial growth, and the injection stops my periods. Thank Jesus! Lol. I call my periods a curse, they are so bad. With a lot of extra care, the injection, pain meds and a lot of aloe vera, I have actually begun to be able to leave the house while on my period these days. Used to, I was stuck in bed for a couple weeks, but it's much better now.

However, yes, you can absolutely make your period late by stressing. It's common. It can be late for many different reasons though. Is the rest of your health in good shape? If so, you probably don't have a lot to worry with. Just try to cut down on the stress.

What are you doing to lower your stress levels? There are lots of things that will help, but it varies depending on the person and why you're stressing. I'd start with taking a big day off and doing something totally fun. Works a lot when I'm freaking. My school was threatening to cut me due to missing my last payment and I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Plus some really nasty problems with a family member. This week was no stress week for me. I got my payment in yesterday and took a day to shop today--fruitless thanks to my deformed boobs making it hard to find a decent damn bra--but destressing nonetheless! Lol. Just really try to let loose and have fun for a night or two. It helps.

Oh yes. I once missed my period for a few months while I was in a "dark night of the soul." During that time my womb spontaneously ejected my IUD and stopped menstruating completely for three or four months. As my time of emotional turmoil decreased in intensity, my period came creeping back and then stabilized. It has been regular since then-- more regular than ever before. When feeling back to that time, I know my body simply had other priorities than procreation. I feel like it was a "reset" in many ways for my reproductive system and my cycle.

No, though it used to be very irregular until I got on the pill. I have never had it go away from stress.
