Do you get a pap smear every year?

Contributor: VioletMoonstone VioletMoonstone
I would much rather have a pap every other year or every 3 years. I've been with my boyfriend for almost 7 years and we're very loyal to eachother. We're eachothers firsts and have never had sex with anyone else. I have no history of ovarian cancer or anything like that in my family at all. They still make me get a pap if I want pills though. I have to admit I know it's good for me but every year it's such a drag and puts me in a bad mood.

I go to a local community health clinic and get my birth control pills for free because I'm unemployed. My boyfriend makes enough to support us both comfortably. For some reason people think I'm a bad and terrible person because of this. It's just the way it is right now and it's been working out fine. We've been together for a long time and we never fight or anything. I don't like being judged because I go and get free pills.

Agreed. There is a very high risk of false positives for women under 25. Many European countries don't start paps until age 25-30, and then only once every 3-5 years.

I used to get it every year. Until recently I went to make a appt. for one and they told me they changed it to every three years now unless there is a problem or your pap came back abnormal. In a way I am glad because I can't stand them. But I will probably make one next year.

Screw them atleast you are protecting yourself and getting them. If you got pregnant by mistake then they talk shit about that too. People don't have nothing better to do with their time.

Try a different doctor! I hate that you experienced that, its awful. It is an uncomfortable situation but it is soooo important. Pap smears saved my life. I am 28 and just had to have a hysterectomy because I had Endometriosis and Cervical Cancer. There is NO REAL symptoms for these two conditions other than severe cramps during your period and maybe a light discharge. They both would have killed me within a year's time. Hope you find it in you to go soon!

I'm so sorry to hear about your bad experience, I can't believe your doctor said that to you!!! I'm assuming you switched doctors?!!!

I had the same kind of experience with a dentist and whitening my teeth!

I was petrified of dentists and didn't go for years, but it's better for your body and your health if you go.

I would recommend you to go, get a new doctor if you haven't already, and you could even pre-medicate yourself with your preferred painkiller before you go to your appointment, after talking about your concerns with your doctor first!

All the best to you and your cervix!

Thank you itsjztme and Ropey.

Yes, I finally have a new doctor, and she's fantastic. You guys really have convinced me, it's been nice to be able to talk about it and get some sympathy. Heh.

I will make an appointment to get one soon. I think I'll also make my SO go with me for moral support, because I know I'm going to be so scared!

I used to go every year, but since I am now over thirty, have had all normal paps so far, and tested negative for HPV, I have them every three years per my gyno's instructions.

I get one every year, but not intentionally as part of an annual check-up. It just works out to at some point during each year I end up pregnant, and my OB does a pap as part of my appointment.

I am on birth control so I have to go every year. I do NOT look forward to it, but I know how important it is! Even if I was not on birth control, I would go every year.
