Douching with Coca--Cola?

Contributor: Gary Gary
I don’t know why this popped into my head today but, I was thinking about when I was in sex-ed in early high school. There was a bin on the teachers desk for anonymous questions. There was this one question that was something along the lines of… “Is it true that if a girl douches with a can of coca-cola after sex, she will not get pregnant?”

At the time I had never heard anything like that before. I am just assuming it was some kind of urban legend, and the teacher did tell everyone it was not true, and that no one should attempt this. Now here is the thing, most of the time those crazy urban legends come from somewhere, and usually have a somewhat logical explanation.

Another reference to this type of situation is in the HBO series Carnivale (which was so bad ass! If you have not seen it, you should go rent the series!) So the series is about a traveling carnival and the epic battle between good and evil. One of the traveling attractions in the carnival, is basically a strip club / mini brothel ‘tent’ that is run by a husband, his wife, and two daughters (and I think the one daughter is actually Meatloaf’s daughter).

In one episode the wife has some sort of a female infection or maybe an outbreak of something, I don’t think they really said what it was specifically. She just mentioned something to her husband about getting some coke, and he new exactly what that meant.

So anyway… Has anyone ever heard this, or things like this before? Does anyone have any idea where this comes from?

I've heard that if you drop a tooth in a glass of Coke it will dissolve it overnight, so maybe it works the same way with sperm? LOL

I had never heard of this before, but here's an interesting link : link .

Hmmm, if it can dissolve a tooth in under 24 hours, I don't really want it near my girly parts, and for sure not inside them. lmao I think this is kind of in the same boat as the douching with Lysol idea...primitive, scary and strange. xD

Also, in the very early versions of Coke (which is when I assume anyone would take the idea seriously) weren't trace amounts of cocaine among the ingredients? I wonder if that would come into play at all?

I've heard this one too. I have no idea where it came from, but I distinctly remember an episode of Myth Busters where they tested this myth, as well as a bunch of other coca cola myths, including the dissolving tooth myth. If I remember correctly, they found that both were false. The coke did discolor the tooth, though. Plus, the coke did a great job of cleaning dirty chrome!

I did a quick PubMed search on the subject, and I only came up with the same mid-80's studies cited in Sammi's link. Unsurprisingly, coke does not appear to be an effective contraceptive. Mainly, I shudder to think about the raging yeast infection all that sugar could cause.

I can't vouch for the tooth thing, but I do that coke can completely rust a nail in just a few days. Coke seriously needs to be pulled off the shelves. That stuff is terrible. I'd never want that many chemicals shoved up inside me.

In Carnivale, she used beer, not Coke. I don't remember what she asked for. Will have to see if I can't find that episode among my DVDs.

And either, I would think, would worsen a yeast infection, not cure it. Cause, I mean, beer is made with yeast, isn't it? And there's tons of sugar in Coke. Infection due to natural sugars is one of the reasons they tell you to put condoms on fruit and vegetables before insertion.

We have used coke to remove rust on some of our cars in the shop, so I don't doubt it could kill sperm. Not that anyone should do it. If it can dissolve a tooth, eat a nail, and remove rust. Then that CAN'T be good for your lady parts.

Yeah, the original Coke did contain cocaine and was a migraine remedy, I think, that was dispensed by a pharmacist.

@Sami: Now that you mention it, I bet the acid in the Coke does do something to the sperm because of the acid, but I'm not sure I would want to douche with it! I've also heard the tooth thing.

It has been a while since I saw it, so I might be wrong, but I could have sworn that it was coke. Oh well. I need to watch that show again anyway.

I can't stop thinking about this... which is worse beer or coke?

I'm thinking beer, because of the yeast... assuming it's a live-yeast bottle. If it's pasteurized, then coke is probably worse because of the higher sugar content. Either way, yikes!

Actually, I do! Somebody actually tried this in a lab once, and proved that coke really does kill sperm, but not efficiently enough to be used as a method of birth control. Douching with it can actually force sperm through your cervix and make you MORE likely got the pregnant than if you'd just left it alone. Also, it can cause a major uterine infection, and corrode your vaginal walls and make them raw and sore for several days. Not a good feeling! Also, as many people know, douching of any kind can contribute to ectopic pregnancies, and we all know how dangerous those can be. Needless to say, I wouldnt recommend trying it, just buy some Plan B.

One of my son's classmates did a science fair project on the effect of different things on teeth. He must have been a dentist's son. Coke was one of the things he soaked a tooth in for at least a few days, probably longer. (Can't remember) It was quite discolored, but not at all dissolved.

Wow, this forum thread got interesting! My sentiments - Douching is bad. I remember thinking it was normal when I was little because of all the commercials that used to be on, but my mom set me straight when I hit puberty (thankfully).

Oh...and my dentist said that diet sodas are worse for your teeth than regular soda.

When a patient had a clogged feeding tube, I saved him a trip to the OR by putting coke in his tube and letting it sit, and the putting more goke in with a piston syringe and using it as a plunger. It was like Draino Hot Shot.

The acid in soft drinks also leeches calcium from bones. Drink plenty of water, and use condoms. If you gotta douche, make it vinegar and water.

Douching with coke would definitely hurt like hell, and it won't dissolve a tooth, nail, or anything else really overnight. The show "Food Detectives" (MythBusters for foodies) demonstrated that pretty effectively.

A few years ago when I had an antibiotic-caused yeast infection, my mother asked if my gynecologist mentioned douching as a possible treatment - to my utter horror. I had to set HER straight on why douching is no longer recommended by most gynecologists (including hers...he practices in the same group as my doc!).

This link will clear up all myths surrounding coke link

Douching with coke is sort of like shutting the barn door after the horse already got out, essentially. I suspect that whoever made this up was doing things with coke bottles that made them non refundable in nine states.

Wow, I have heard of a coffe enema, but never a coca cola douche. I imagine aside from the obvious NASTY infection you'd get that the carbonation itself would feel strange. Unless of course you let it sit out..in either case, I would say nobody should try that.
The beer thing as well...wow. Yeast anyone?

Yikes, I remember hearing about this when I was younger... Douching is just scary in my book anyways... let alone with something as sugar loaded as that lol... ack!

I have never heard this, but I wouldn't willingly shoot sugar into my body (it just screams yeast infection). I have heard the old plain yogurt remedy to infections...I used to take diflucan until they found my heart problem.

Mythbusters did a whole episode on the myths surrounding Coke. It's mildly spermicidal, but would cause more damage than good. It would increase the risk of infection by throwing off a woman's vaginal pH and would disrupt the normal flora. Further, sperm can outrace the douche. It's not a good idea.

I have a story for this. My dad said that one time he came inside a girl because the condom came off. The girl then grabbed a coke bottle shook it up and shot it inside of herself...

Douching with plain seltzer, on the other hand, would kill some bacteria and deodorize the region.

If you shake it up enough, you risk a uterine embolism, which can be fatal.
