"Female Condoms" were introduced about 15 years ago under the "gender-neutral" product name, "Realty." (See: link)

Around that time, I read that many gay men bought "Realty" for safe anal sex. I think this both scandalized and delighted Reality's manufacturers. That "advertising" encouraged me to buy a box of Reality to try on myself.

To "correctly" insert a Reality in my rectum, I used a small dildo. If I recall correctly (this was about 15 years ago), there was a seam (or two?) along the length of the Reality. This seam was like the seam along Zip-Loc plastic bags (Reality was made of a similar plastic), which was prominent. And because of this prominence, it irritated my rectum going in. Worse, when I fucked myself with a dildo, the condom slid in and out with the thrusting, greatly irritating my butt hole. I quickly stopped. (I believed then that vaginal walls were less sensitive to this irritation than rectal walls. I also wondered how many gay men also found the seams irritating and stopped using Reality for safe anal sex.)

I didn't try another Reality after that and I still have that box of unused Realitys somewhere in the back of a drawer. Maybe I needed to get used to the seam, but the "Reality" for me was Reality didn't work for me.

Fast forward to the present, I don't know if there are seams on current "Female Condoms," but if you know, please tell me. I also don't know if gay men are using FC for safe anal sex. (See above.) If anyone read a report about gay men currently using FC, please tell me.

Thanks for reading.

these no longer are made of that plastic or have that seam. they're easy to insert and are not very noticable within the vaginal walls.
the only fault I have found with them is that depending on the size of your parter(s) they may slide during sex. they still offer protection, though.
all in all, I personally dont use them any more.
I prefer to have my partner wear a (latex free) condom because with us, It's more comfortable.
Every vagina/penis is different and I would say to explore a few options by yourself and with your partner(s).
At the end of the day though, remember that uncomfortable protection is better than no protection.

they dont have that horrible seam anymore and most people dont use them but there are still several people out there (like me) who do and/or would be willing to use them for anal sex.

I have never used them, but a few advantages of them that I have heard are that regardless of how annoying they can be to insert, you can do so prior to sex so you could put it in, go to dinner, come home, and have sex the way you would if you weren't even using a condom. However, I was told that they make noise. I'm sure that depends on the people involved though.

I like the concept of a receptive barrier, but I personally prefer male condoms. And I'll echo what others have mentioned: the new material without the plastic seam is WAY more comfortable. Definitely worth a try!

My last experience was in college, but they suck basically. Difficult to insert and rarely stay in place. Overpriced. Not worth the effort.

In the past, I have read of these condoms being used for anal sex. It actually seems like it would work reasonably well, though I have never seen such a condom in real life. I believe there is an internal ring and an external ring, so it should be secured easily enough. I can imagine it protects the walls of the rectum fairly well, provided there is adequate lubrication inside beforehand.

If I had a partner and was given some to test, I wouldn't mind trying them (as the receptive partner). It would make for some fun science! (Or perhaps simply hilarious science.)
