Have you ever used an IUD for birth control? What was your experience with it?

Contributor: Bonanza Jellybean Bonanza Jellybean
I'm curious how many other women use the IUD (Intrauterine Device) method of birth control and what their experiences with it were. I've had the Mirena IUD for three months now and it's the first form of hormonal birth control I've used. I chose it because it is one of the most reliable contraceptive methods, it is likely to give shorter, lighter periods, and it was free due to a reproductive health program in my area.

My IUD has been effective so far--no pregnancies--but I definitely got the side effects they warn you about. For me, it was a month straight of bad cramps and spotting, followed by a month of more intermittent cramping and spotting before I finally got my period again (right on time, oddly enough)--and rather than being lighter, it was longer and heavier. I occasionally experience very brief cramping during work or other average physical activities, but the constant cramping and spotting seems to be over.

My partner felt the strings once during sex and he said it felt like something "poking" his penis painfully. We dealt with that by using a condom, but other than that one time he says he's never noticed it.

I'm curious as to what others' experiences have been with an IUD.

I don't like having that in my body. My friend has had major problems since she had to have it removed.

I got my first copper IUD many years ago. I got it because almost every other form of birth control had very negative side effects on me. The pill made me positively psychotic, and any other form of birth control that used hormones had the same effect. Even the NuvaRing which is supposed to use a very low dose of hormones. I'm also latex sensitive, so most condoms are out of the question. I can use non-latex condoms, but they are ridiculously expensive. So... my gynecologist recommended the copper IUD. And boy am I glad she did.

Yes, I did experience some fairly bad cramping and heavier than usual periods for the first couple of months, but then things settled down, and now I never even notice it. I do check to make sure the strings are still hanging out of my cervix every couple of months. When I'm taking a shower, I just squat down and slip my fingers inside to feel the strings. So far, they've always been there. The strings were very slightly stiff at first, but they softened up fairly quickly.

I did have to have my first IUD removed when an earlier sexual partner actually pulled on the strings and pulled the IUD out of place. I'm not quite sure how he managed it since the strings are pretty short and somewhat slippery. But you know what they say about foolproof and fools. And he was quite the fool. So make sure you tell your partner NOT to pull on the strings. None of my other partners even seemed to notice the strings, or if they did, they didn't say anything. I've been with my husband for almost eight years now and he has never complained about feeling the strings during sex. I'll try and remember to ask him if he's ever even felt them.

I've been using an IUD for over 12 years now. So even if the fool hadn't pulled on the strings I would have had to have the IUD replaced, since you need to replace the copper IUD every 10 years. The IUD's with hormones need to be replaced every five years. I plan on continuing to use an IUD until I no longer need any form of birth control. It's just the easiest and most effective form of birth control out there.

I've never gotten pregnant since using the IUD and I would definitely recommend using one to anyone who has already had a child. There is some concern about women who have never had a child using an IUD because the body might try to expel it, but I don't know what the statistics are on that. I'm pretty sure they will give you an IUD even if you've never been pregnant, but you should talk to your gynecologist about the risks involved.

Thank you for your post, you bring up some really good points. I've never been pregnant and I didn't have an issue getting approved for an IUD, nor has my IUD tried to dislodge itself. I check the strings monthly and I've warned my partner not to tug on them, although he was able to deduce that for himself. That's a real bummer that yours was pulled out of place. I'm curious (if you don't mind answering), how uncomfortable is it having the IUD removed compared to having it inserted? And is it easier the second time?

I originally wanted to get the copper IUD, but I have various metal allergies so I opted not to risk it.

As for it being the easiest and most effective form of birth control, my roommate actually got Implanon (a hormonal method) shortly after I had my IUD placed, and statistically it is equally as effective as a hormonal IUD (about 99.8%). It's a matchstick-sized piece of plastic that is injected into the upper arm and lasts for about 3 years. It's worth looking into if you can use hormonal birth control, want something very effective, but are turned off by the idea of an IUD.

Well, theoretically, it should be much easier to remove the IUD than to get it inserted. You shouldn't have to go through the discomfort of having your cervix dilated. The doctor simply works the strings inside a little tube which s/he then slides either next to or into your cervix (sorry, I can't be exact, it's been a while and my memory isn't clear), gently pulls on the strings which pulls the IUD into the tube and slides the whole thing out. You don't have to get dilated or anything. Unfortunately, because of the way that mine got pulled out of place, that method wouldn't work for me, so I had to get my cervix dilated again in order to remove the IUD. Hopefully, you will have a much easier time of it when you need to get yours removed.

Oops! Missed the question about whether it was easier getting it inserted the second time. Honestly, I'm not sure. Maybe it was. You still have to get your cervix dilated again, but it seems to me like it was less uncomfortable the second time around.

Admittedly, the cramps and heavy bleeding were annoying the first couple of months, but honestly, it was sooooo worth it for the long term, don't-have-to-even-thi nk-about-it, almost 100% effective birth control. There were no other side effects that I ever noticed. (Aside from sleeping with a fool.)

The IUD is NOT in your vagina. It's in your uterus. Once it's properly placed, you can't even tell it is there. Okay, there are two small strings that hang out of your cervix and can be felt if someone really sticks their fingers up in there and feels around. But I've never heard of a penis that was as sensitive as a fingertip.

Are you sure those "other people" weren't talking about the NuvaRing? The NuvaRing is a round rubber ring that is placed and left in your vagina for three weeks at a time, and could, possibly interfere with sex in some way.

No, irishlove is right-- I have spoken to people who had problems with the strings during intercourse, but it's different for each person. My sister has the Mirena IUD just like I do, and she says that her husband frequently experiences discomfort with the strings and that they even scratched his penis. My partner only felt the strings once, but there was one time about a month later when I found an unexplained scratch on the shaft of his penis. After hearing my sister's experience, I think the strings may have been the culprit.

Apparently different people can have different experiences with the same product. Who knew?

I could only base my comments on my experience. None of my previous partners ever mentioned that they could feel the strings. And when I asked my husband, he said that he has never felt the strings from my current IUD. I assumed that meant that it was unlikely that other men could feel them. Well... you know what they say about assumptions.

Maybe some doctors cut the strings shorter than others, or maybe the strings vary a bit depending on what batch they're from. Ah well...

The biggest problem I have with my IUD is I like having rough sex and if I get pounded too hard then the IUD stabs me in the uterus or cervix I'm not sure actually and I bleed afterward.

The strings have had no problems for us at all during sex.

I'm considering IUD if I ever manage to find someone to make me need contraception. Almost completely virginal now.

There are two amazing places with info on the IUD and personal experiences: IUD Divas and Vagina Pagina.

It shouldn't matter how rough your sex is, your IUD shouldn't poke you and you definitely shouldn't bleed. I was heavily involved in martial arts for a while and I asked about being punched or kicked in the stomach and if that would affect my IUD. The doctor assured me that they would have to be able to reach into my uterus in order for it to be a problem.

Have you spoken to your doctor about this? Your IUD may have slipped out of place or there may be some other problem. But you should definitely get it checked out.

I have talked to my doctor because of multiple types of bleeding problems and they related the bleeding to ovarian cysts, but I'm the stabbing feeling really feels like it's from the IUD, I get it from time to time sometimes when I'm not having sex as well. I have had several ultrasounds to check on the placement of it and they found the IUD to be fine. Now you've got me concerned that they were wrong though.

I had a similar experience with a "stabbing" sensation that I thought was my IUD. It turned out that it was an abdominal cyst that was big enough to press into the wall of my vagina. So when hubby's penis rubbed against the wall of my vagina, I felt like something was stabbing me.

This was not an ovarian cyst, this was something completely different and in a different area. Has your doctor ever managed to create the same "stabbing" feeling when examining you? I had to go to several different ob/gyns until I found one that actually believed me about the pain. The first two just said that I was obviously frigid and was experiencing vaginismus. (Just because they are a doctor doesn't mean they can't be an idiot as well.) I had to have surgery to remove the cyst. (Fortunately, it was not cancerous. Though they did discover an abdominal hernia and some endometriosis while they were in there.) Since then, I have not experienced the stabbing sensation during sex.

You might want to have your entire abdomen checked for cysts or abnormal growths. You shouldn't have to feel pain when having sex. (At least not pain that you don't create yourself.)

I have had Mirena for 4 your now.

It was a bitch to get in! It really hurt like hell. I have always had really horrible cramps and getting my cervix dilated was really the wors thing I ever felt. I wanted to pass out.

Anyways, I have "periods" that last a day or two, every now and then but very rarely. I don't have to use anything beyond a pamty liner to protect my panties. I also have very intense cramping every month, distracting enough that I start sweating from the face from the pain.

My partner has and does feel the strings, but only in a particular position. The one position that I can orgasm in is the one we can't do (me on top, grinding on him front to back). We had to find other ways. I can't wait to get it out to do that sex position again, lol.

Sex can be painful if my partner penetrates too far. My cervix is deadly sensitive and if he goes to far and hits my cervix, I am in a lot of pain.

I am really happy I got the Mirena. Whether or not I have it, my pain is related to the sensitivity of my cervix and my body during my cycle. Or so that is how I think it is. I will be removing it in a year...to bring life to the world....but in a year...so I have still have time to enjoy being young!

Too high a percentage of failures and too many issues with bleeding, and risk of uterine wall damage for my own taste. Just never found it to be a method I wanted to try.

I LOVE my Mirena IUD. I am currently on my second one. Normally, they last for 5 years, however I did not have Med Ins so I didnt have mine removed/replace for another year (so 6 yrs total). ; ) I havent had any side effects or gotten pregnant. With my first Mirena, my periods started getting lighter then stopped all together. It freaked me out at first but it was awesome!! Im currently in my 3rd yr w/the second one and my periods are super light and only last 2 days. = )

I have had two other friends who have had the Mirena IUD and one had no probs and loved it. She actually had it removed after 3 yrs and got preg w/i 2 months (it was planned). Other friend had a horrible exp and had it removed. So it can be way diff for everybody.

My bf has no complaints w/the string every poking him. He did say it was kind of weird in the beginning (I was the 1st gf w/this b/c method he ever slept w/). He did say he can feel the string when he fingers me and sometimes worries about getting too crazy and pulling it out! YIKES!!

So far the pill hasn't caused any problems for me, and it's nice to know exactly when my periods will be 6 months from now (like for scheduling my guy's fall visit). I think I'd consider an IUD if i was having sex regularly and the dates weren't planned, though. Not having to worry about a pill every day within 30 hours of each other would be nice, and I like the idea of having the physical barrier there (I'm still insanely paranoid about the pill not really working, only reason I convince myself it works is because my period is so regulated now). I'll research it more when I get closer to the time where I'd consider an IUD, there might even be new technology by then.

I have endometriosis and have had surgery for it, as well as uterine scarring, as well as having very heavy periods most of the time, so the IUD is not a good fit for me. I have intense uterine spasms during my period and would probably expel an IUD, plus I don't get along well with most forms of extra female hormones. (Intravaginal estrogen, plus a minute dose of progesterone is about all I can handle, and that's nowhere near enough for pregnancy prevention.)

I know the Mirena has hormones added, which may or may not help with excess bleeding, but I can't take a chance.

I've had mine for 6 months and love it. It hurt like hell getting it put in, and there was some bad cramping for a few days. Otherwise, it's been a dream. I stopped having cycles altogether within two months, though I have about two days a month of light mood swings. I was very forgetful with the pill, and it's nice not having to worry about daily birth control. My husband has never felt the strings. I check to make sure it's in place about once every 6 weeks, and it's not always easy to find them. I guess the strings really can be different.

Maybe it's not my business to say (I enjoy really rough sex too) but if this is happening, scarring of the uterus could be occurring. I've seen this as a nurse. It isn't common, but if the IUD was dislodged at any time, it could be causing problems, or it could be something completely unrelated to the IUD. Endometriosis can cause bleeding and pain during sex, and IUDs are not recommended for Endo patients. The ONLY way to diagnose Endometriosis is by endoscopic surgery, Endometrial "implants" simply cannot be seen by any form of imaging.

You may want to ignore my nosiness (sorry) but PLEASE tell your GYN about this. Uterine scarring is not something you want, if the IUD is also being moved around enough during sex to cause bleeding, it could also be dislodged without your realizing it.

I'd call your GYN's office and talk to him about this. An other form of BC might be better for you.

I also agree with Ivy that if your doctor is blowing off your concerns, and can't find "a reason" for the pain, you NEED to see someone else. I had to see four different doctors, before I had one of my health conditions properly taken care of. Not all doctors will take you seriously, and pain during sex, whether that pain is from "rough sex" or not, should never be ignored.

I think we all want you to get the health care you deserve so you can enjoy your sex life and not hurt your body. A good place to find a competent and well educated doctor is at a University Teaching Hospital. I'm not a fan a "Community Hospitals" for anything more than colds.
