Infections while on antibiotic

Do any of you get yeast or bacterial infections while on certain antibiotics? What do you do to prevent it or treat it??

I do get infections while on amoxicillin, or any kind of -cillin medication. My doctor will usually give me a prescription yeast infection medication along with the antibiotic to prevent the infection.

I don't think it's that uncommon. P'gell can say this more authoritatively, but in many cases in the body one microorganism or group of microorgansims keep others in check, and when you take a medication that kills off the group that keeps something in check then the bad guys reproduce and take over. It can also happen sometimes in the intestine, which is one reason they often recommend eating yogurt when you're on an antibiotic.

ScottA is correct. Throughout your body, you have multiple good bugs and there is a delicate balance between them. Your digestive system in particular has lots of bacteria that are normal. The problem is that antibiotics are non-specific in what organisms they affect. Thus both good and bad bacteria are often killed off. Digestively, this can often lead to symptoms such as diarrhea. In women, a common side effect of antibiotic usage is development of a yeast infection. When on antibiotics, doctors may suggest taking either probiotics or foods with active cultures such as yogurt to prevent such problems. They are not a guarantee, but they also don't hurt and are worth trying, especially if you've had problems in the past.

For vaginal yeast problems you'll probably just have to treat it prophylactically (is this the right spelling?), because eating yougurt and other probiotics won't keep your vaginal beasties in balance.

Actually ScottA, they do help for vaginal infections as well. Many doctors recommend a strict diet for those who are prone to vaginal yeast infections.

Whenever you're on antibiotics, you really need to maintain a healthy diet to avoid yeast infections. Many women (myself included) have this same problem. Cut back on yeasty foods, lower your sugar intake, eat lots of low-fat yogurt (I recommend Greek yogurt), and consider starting a probiotic. If you're particularly prone to infection, I'd make these regular habits instead of just when you're on antibiotics.

I used to always get a script for Diflucan when I got an antibiotic, but I really don't care for taking more prescription medication than necessary so now take acidophilus capsules instead, for the duration of the antibiotic cycle.

Yep! All great advice. Just make sure to check and make sure the yogurt says that it has m. acidophillus in it because there are yogurts that don't. That's the stuff that helps keep the yeast in check. You can also take it in handy pill form as well; look for it by the vitamins in the grocery store! Additionally, your menstrual cycle often restores balance your vagina by making it more acidic and crowding out the yeast.

There are also quite a few home remedies you can use if you start to get that inkling of an itch, that many women have used with much success for a long time. Very popular among those is the clove of garlic inserted into the vagina each night for a week. Plain yogurt (without sugars or anything added) can also be applied directly to the vulva or even inserted with a vaginal applicator from a tampon or a baster and this provides a LOT of relief in my personal experience. I've never done the garlic thing but I know plenty of women that swear by it.

Also remember that stress can weaken your immune system and make you more vulnerable to infections, and that an imbalanced diet or poor sleeping habits can all add the the amount of stress your body has to cope with. And of course all the traditional advice such as cotton underwear (or none!) so your vagina can breathe, not to take baths with oils or soaps added if you know you are prone to yeast infections, etc.etc.

I'm VERY prone to yeast infections so I've done ridiculous amounts of research and gotten an absurd number of doctors' opinions. This is some of the most useful stuff I've learned over the years.

I am with SL&L here. I am prone to them also and I HATE yogurt. So I pop acidophillus pills when I am on antibiotics and it does help.

I only get yeast infections when I'm on antibiotics. I used to fret over the little changes I go through in my cycle (before I understood they were natural) and I'd wonder if I had a yeast infection. But then once I had one there was no doubt I did. LOL (Yes, I was that naive.)

The only time that I got a yeast infection I had just finished up, or was about to finish, my antibiotics.

unfortunately, I am one of those women, that no matter what I do, if I have to take antibiotics, I go ahead and get a yeast infection treatment while I am getting the prescription filled. since puberty, every single time I have had to take an antibiotic, I have gotten a yeast infection. and according to doctors it is a somewhat normal occurance, considering how antibiotics work. which is by weakening cell walls, so that your immune system can kill the infection, but it weakens ALL cell walls in the body, thus screwing with the ph balance in the vagina, and allowing the naturally occurring yeast bacteria grow like wildfire. even when you dont have a yeast infection, there is a minute of that rather nasty yeast bacteria present.

I am very susceptible to yeast infections when I am taking antibiotics but have found out that by eating yogurt rather liberally restores the healthy flora balance in my vagina w/o taking further meds. Unfortunately, antibiotics destroy the good flora as well as offending flora. And besides, yogurt is good for all of us...
