The number of male gynecologists

Contributor: snowminx snowminx
Do you think it's weird that there are so many male gynecologists around?

I mean I could understand some wanting to go into the field because maybe they get excited about the birth of babies or maybe someone in their family had cervical cancer but I still don't think THAT many guys would fall under those categories. When I was looking for a gynecologist the males out numbered the female doctors! For a female health field I found this fact to be very odd to say the least. I looked into this and the trend doesn't seem to only be for my area either. I could understand maybe say 30-40 percent but it was over 50 percent of males. Since I found this odd I decided to look at the opposite with how many female Urologists there were and guess now many I found in my area? -None.

In my area
gynecologists- male:28 females:15
urologists- male:7 females:0

I think its pretty obvious...would you rather look at vagina or penis all day long?

I have a few gynos as clients, male and female. Most of them said that they wanted to be in the medical field, but going into gynecology 'just happened'.

To be honest...neither! lol
I'm sure both of them have had their scares from genitals with stds. If I HAD to choose I would actually pick the penis. Guys aren't going to be poping out at babies any time soon and also gynos can be called in at all kinds of weird hours because babies just don't wait!

I think it's just a reflection of the fact that medicine is a male dominated field in general. It's not just gynecology.

A friend of my parents is a OBGYN, and though he's retired now, I can remember sometimes that we would be staying at his house and he'd get a call in the middle of the night to deliver a baby. He always got so excited, I think what he loved about it was the rush. He probably would have done well in emergency medicine as well.

I find it a little odd my first exam was done by a male I find it slittle uncomfortable so I switched to a woman

Most guys aren't going to go to school and do the work to become a gyno just to get their kicks by seeing vaginas all day. My ob/gyn with my youngest 2 was a male and I would go back in a heartbeat if he was still in the area. I felt he was much more interested in what my concerns were than the female I went to first who kept interjecting her own experiences.

Personally, I have always gone to a woman, I don't think that I would go to a man.

I've noticed this too. I've wondered why myself.

In my area there is only one female gyno. She was so mean that I had to book my last appointment with a man. I was so happy when I got there and found out that not only did I not need a full exam since I'd had one not long ago but that he was out of the office and they also had 3 women on staff. I had a super nice midwife.

I've never thought of it that way, but now that you bring it up I can see how a man would be more objective than a woman. Interesting.

I LOVE my OB/GYN. I had initially tried to get with a midwife while I was pregnant...and I strongly disliked both the women who worked at the midwife office. So I was forced to find an OB/GYN instead. I searched around a bit and came up with my current OB/GYN and I adore him - he has a genuine passion for his job, he's very gentle (I have found female doctors to be rough on the female anatomy more often than not!) and he's respectful. I can't understand half of what he says, but I like him anyways haha.

But I do agree that it's a reflection of the medical field being generally dominated by males. When I was looking for doctors to deliver my baby, I came across maybe 4 or 5 females, the rest were all males. All the walk in clinics here with general practitioners typically have 5-6 males in rotation, and maybe 1 female. All the specialists I've ever seen for anything have been male.

Nursing is the same, but the other way around. Heavily saturated with females over males.

I don't think it's weird. However, I prefer to go to a female doctor. I have endometriosis and there are times where a female has more insight, especially when it concerns extreme cramping. My aunt, who also had endometriosis, went to a male OB/GYN who told her she was exaggerating her pain. She was so pissed off because he wouldn't know. For reference for any of you don't know how extreme the pain can be for some, I was hospitalized the first time I felt the pain. I literally could not unfold my body and stayed in the fetal position crying until I was given morphine.

It`s not too weird, but I have always had a female gyno, and hopefully will always.

Are there still more male doctors than female doctors? That may be why.

I've always been weirded out by it. I have a male OB/GYN who I love to pieces. He's very supportive and welcoming and listens to all of my concerns. But when I was looking for a new gyno, I was a little weary about choosing a man. I felt like their lack of firsthand experience would hinder their practice. I'm just happy I lucked out and found such a great doctor this time, and I guess my opinion has changed a bit.

I'd agree with this statement. I still find it a bit odd, and then you hear stories of male gynos secretly taking photos of their patients with camera pens and such... Weird! I've gone to a male once because it was an emergency, but otherwise I make a point to find a female.

My GYN is male but my grandfather had some issues with his knob and went to a female doctor for it!

Yes...I don't see many female dentists either. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
