Getting a Period on Birth Control?

Contributor: sweetpea12 sweetpea12
I have been taking birth control for a year now, and I'm finding that my period comes while I"m taking my third week of pills. I thought that I couldn't get my period while taking birth control. I thought that I would only start mensrating when my three weeks of pills were over... WHat 's going on?

Hm, the only times that that has happened to me is when I've taken a pill hours late or been taking antibiotics, and it doesn't sound like you're doing either of those. If you and your doctor can't find out why this is happening, talk to him/her about trying a new brand. What you're using right now just might not be right for your body.

Sometimes this happens if you're on a multi-pack regimen (taking several packs before taking a week off). I would definitely talk to your doctor, and he or she may increase the dose or change the type of hormones.

I've had it happen before, you may just need a simple pill change. I'd call/visit your provider.

It's called breakthrough bleeding and it's fairly normal.
