Pharmacy sold out of birth control pills

Contributor: jr2012 jr2012
I sort of need to rant/look for support, here!

I have been taking birth control pills for a really long time (no problems, completely happy). I always refilled my prescription at the Pharmacy so I can pick it up on friday (which is my day off), and I start the new pack on Sunday.

Today I went to the pharm as usual and they told me they are SOLD OUT of my pills and any generics that are available. WTF? So I have to wait until either they come back in stock, or my Doctor gives an okay on a different brand. Because it's the weekend, we all know nothing's going to get sorted till next week.

Basically there's going to be a lapse in my pill-taking, and I'm cranky about it! I just won't have sex until I'm 100% protected again (we don't do it often anyways so it's no big deal), and I can't be mad since this is obviously not like going without a prescription for a disease......but I don't love the idea of having hormones out of whack for who-knows-how-long.

I know it's not a big deal but kind of a WTF moment.

Has anyone else ever had their Pharmacy sell out of your prescription? Or have you ever stopped taking the pill for a week or so....did you have any symptoms?

I've never had that problem with birth control, but I have it ALL THE TIME with my other meds. Sometimes they have to special order things for me and it takes forever. Major pain.

Back when I was on the pill there were a few times I stopped it and started back up without issue. I was much younger then though and my hormones weren't as volatile.

ouch! I hope they're not extremely vital meds! I would be knocking down doors if it was for a serious condition.

They're vital, but they stay in the system long enough that I can go 2-3 days without them and be okay.

I've never had this happen but I get mine directly from Planned Parenthood. I'd be angry if they were sold out too!

This has happened to me with my BC pill. Although, my pharmacy switched me to a generic... and I have had terrible side effects from it. Fortunately after a year, I'm finally getting back on the original name brand pill. My hormones are all screwed up so I'm looking forward to getting them sorted.

It's very strange, I've been on the pill for about 17 years or so and this has never happened before. Also last time I went to pick up another Rx, they were out of that too and I had to call another pharmacy. I don't know what's going on lately!

I'm sorry you have to go off your pill, I hope you're able to get a hold of more soon. I know it is no fun to have your hormones going crazy!

Hit up another pharmacy? If yours is popular, then it will sell out. If not, consider ordering online.

I have been taking a generic of lo/ovral...which is that bcp that got recalled earlier this year for messing up the order of inactive pills (the generics are unaffected since they are made in different companies). I am theorizing that the generics for this unfortunate name brand have probably increased in demand. Could you possibly be taking the same ones I wonder?

I always get really nervous when switching brands...luckily I have never had bad side effects, but I know, like you, one can! Sigh..too bad hormonal birth control is just so darn effective!

Thanks for commiserating

I used to go to Planned Parenthood, and they would give me 6 months of pills at a time. It was the BEST. I actually sort of miss that place!

my insurance has a deal with one of those mail-order pharmacies. That may be a good idea for me to look into in the future, since they undoubtedly have a huge stock! Thanks!

Not birth control, but I've had walgreens, walmart, and kroger, all run out of my prescriptions before, sometimes taking them a week or two to get it back in stock.

I work in a pharmacy - just so you know, quite often it is the manufacturer who cannot supply the product and the pharmacy is not made aware of the situation until the order shows up and the product is not there. The manufacturer often doesn't even have a release date of the product either, so it makes it difficult to know if they are just short supply or if they are having trouble obtaining ingredients to make the products. Either way, it often leaves the staff trying to call around to see if anyone else has the product and is willing to sell it to you or trying to call the md for alternatives so the patient doesn't have to go without. Very frustrating for patients as well as staff! and yes, it seems to happen alot more often than it used to (I've worked in pharmacy since 1987)

I take Seasonique. And what's strange is that, over all these years I've never really had a problem with any bc pill - except for this generic Amethia.

I use a mail order pharmacy for most of my stuff, and they weren't getting any from their supplier. I called around locally, and couldn't find it at local pharmacies either! Finally my local pharmacy had some in stock, so I get to start it in about a week. Strange, and makes me wonder what the heck happened.

Yours definitely sounds plausible - since the name brand was recalled, there was more demand for the generic. I remember hearing about that recall!

I would be pissed as well!!! Are you able to call ahead and order it in the future to make sure it is there and if not ask your doctor to send the prescription to a different pharmacy?

I fortunately have never had that problem and hope to never have it! Scary!!

oh I agree with you totally. I work in healthcare as well and I know that the hardest working people are usually the ones behind the counter and the ones answering phones! I try my best to be as nice and pleasant, and patient as possible....really the best method to get things done.

After some calling around I learned that there is a "national shortage" of my brand. Not the pharmacy's fault at all (I didn't really think it was in the first place). My dr's office was completely unfazed.

I got a new script, and my pharmacy hooked me up. I just gotta cross my fingers and hope the new pill doesn't give any side-effects! And in the future refill my prescription even more in advance than before. Live and learn

This has never happened to me. So there aren't other pharmacies around? Maybe from the same branch that they could call and check?

That is so annoying! I would have simply gone to a different pharmacy. Getting mixed up on birth control isn't something I've had happen to me before but I can't imagine it would be fun.

*touches nose*

I'd stand there as the pharmacist called all of their sister locations and found a pack for me.

Swap pharmacies for this refill. Get it transferred to a new one. If you like your current pharmacy just get it transferred back in. Transfers are free and easy.

thanks for the concern and advice everyone! Turns out there is a national shortage of my particular brand. Crazy right?

(I can't find out why, perhaps a shortage of an ingredient?)....so it is unlikely I will get it anywhere at this time!

I got the brand switched by my doctor who seemed like they have dealt with this a lot recently, so hopefully I can avoid any "shortages" in the future!
