Do you skip your period on birth control?

Contributor: Supervixen Supervixen
I rarely have periods because I'm on the pill. As a lot of you probably know, you can safely skip your period by skipping the last week of placebo pills in your monthly pill pack and going straight into the next pack of pills. I find it refreshing to not have my period, and as far as I've been able to gather from research and discussions with doctors, it's totally safe and without risk to your health. However, I've had several conversations with women about this, and they seemed skeptical. Mostly, they either felt like it is unnatural and we're supposed to have a period, or they worried about as of yet undetected health effects from not menstruating. Others still felt like menstruating is a part of their female identity, and so they don't like the idea of skipping it. For those on the pill (or other birth control methods where this is possible), do you skip your periods? How do you feel about it?

I feel that menstruating is a uniquely female experience, and it's too much a part of my identity to skip it all together.
If there's a special occasion coming up, like a vacation, it's nice to have the option.
3
It's unnatural to intentionally skip your period.
Holy cow, you can voluntarily skip your period?!

I have the implant, and get my period once every two months (on average). I would prefer not having it at all, but it's nice to have it less frequently.

I skipped my periods most often for the last 5 years. I can tell you I feel much healthier and happier when I don't have it. I also talked to doctors and did my own research and feel totally fine with this decision.

I also have an implant. I get a period 2-3 times a year.

I am on continuous birth control and skip my period regularly. My periods were so bad before that I couldn't function for 1-2 weeks a month. That was unacceptable to me. Skipping them now helps my life be much healthier, so I love it.

When you're on birth control, the period you have is "fake" anyway. It's not a real period - where you're shedding an unused egg along with the unused endometrial lining. (Because you don't ovulate on the pill.) So, since it's fake anyway, it really doesn't serve a purpose and there's really no need to have it.

I'm on the pill and I don't skip my period. Because I'm heterosexually active, I see it as a monthly pregnancy test that I go through for my own peace of mind. My period is extremely light on BC, though: about a teaspoon of blood a day for 4 days... my natural volume is probably 10 times worse. It's all about perspective.

Besides, I've heard that if you skip more than about 3 months at a time with most pills, you run the risk of having a "super period" from all the lining build-up. I'd rather have a tiny one once a month.

The "super period" is a myth; I've skipped many, many months on the pill at a time. In fact, I had my period for the first time in over a year last month, and it was totally normal. The uterine lining doesn't build up while you are on the active pills, which is why if you continue to take them, there is no period. You can get occasional spotting, but that's only happened to me a couple of times, and was such a little amount of blood, that it didn't bother me.

That's good to know. I was under the impression you could only do it without the super period with certain progestins, but I suppose I was wrong.

I know that it's perfectly safe to skip my period when I'm on birth control but I don't because my fiance likes the assurance that I'm not pregnant every month. The one time I did skip my period because of a vacation, I bled for two weeks while on hormone pills. My body just wasn't accustomed to having 6 weeks of hormones straight.

For me, my period is reassuring. I like to have it only because it lets me know I'm not pregnant. If I started skipping it, I'd be worried a lot more often. It's nice to know that I could if I wanted to, though.

There is a lot of research on it. Most have not seen any adverse affects for seasonique style pills.

However, there is a reason the lining is cleared out every cycle (or 3). The uterine lining is not designed to remain in the uterus, in that form, for a long period of time. Leaving it there beyond 3 months can increase your chances for certain illnesses and issues (potentially small, but present). Some issues have been infections of the lining and even abnormal growths in the area.

I would not go beyond 3 packs or a season style pill. Better safe than sorry.

I did for the summer months and it was going great. Then I missed a damn pill and started having spotting, missed another this month and now it's like a period. I'm supposed to have my period next week so I'm just going to wait it out and then probably go back on the normal pills. Before, I could miss one or take it late and not have the bleeding and I've been on them for 11yrs. I'm not really worried if something should happen since I want to be a mom some day and I'm engaged to the guy I would love to have a child with. I'm more worried about getting my cycle back on track so I can stop wearing these annoying pads.

I'm not so worried about getting my period to indicate that I'm not pregnant--I don't know, I guess I figure with such a high success of preventing pregnancy, and the fact that I've been on them for nine years and never forget to take them because I'm so used to them, it doesn't even cross my mind. I also figure that if I do get pregnant, I'll figure it out pretty quickly anyway, based on other physical indications that your body gives you when you get pregnant.

I was wondering about this because I have been on birth control for a year now. And I always take the placebo pills and allow my body to have a period. I only get it for like 3 days now.. So it's not even that big of a deal. But I wish I could have no period ever!! Maybe I'll try your method
