Sleep Apnea

Contributor: wetone123 wetone123
I have a lot of sleep related problems. Sleep Apnea is one of them. Got a CPAP mask, but it has been hard for me to get used to it. I move around a lot in my sleep. When I go to sleep, the mask is firmly attached to my head...then I wake up several hours later with the thing in my mouth and I'm chewing it like bubble gum.

Just wondered if anyone else has this problem.

Does anyone here have Sleep apnea? If so, do you use a CPAP mask?

Is it hard for you to use it like you should?

Any problems wearing it?

Does it turn your lover off?

Do you ever wake up with it in your mouth, chewing on it?

It took me months of diligent use before I could go the entire night with the thing still properly in place the next morning.
I cannot imagine that my partner considers it to be sexy but the machine is quiet and with it I no longer snore so I don't think she would say that it's a turn off.

Whew! I'm glad I'm not alone with this problem! Hopefully I will be able to keep it on in the future. It seems so hard right now...The people in my home are very thankful I don't snore anymore as well.

I do not have sleep apnea but this topic caught my attention. Too bad you have that problem, but I know it's common when you introduce something new it takes a while to get used to. Even when I had a retainer when I had my braces taken off a long time ago, I would take it out in my sleep and chew on it, or toss it somewhere. Yuck!

A good friend of mine has Apnea and uses a CPAP, she had this issue when first wearing it, she found that by wearing it regularly and tweaking certain things such as adding a pillow to the other side of her body when she wasn't having her boyfriend stay over, and sleeping closer to her wall so she was less likely to turn over, this helped reduce taking the mask off. Tossing and turning in her sleep caused her to take it off a lot :/ so maybe that could help you a tiny bit

I appreciate the tips Peggi! I have already done the pillow thing, but am anxious to try the sleeping by the wall. I move around a lot in my sleep. Or so I'm told!

My boyfriend's father has this actually but I'd be unable to ask him about the whole turning his lover off thing lol.. that'd be a bit uncomfortable for me

I have sleep apnea. I do not and refuse to wear the mask. I woke up once feeling like I was choking.

My husband can not sleep at all with his. He says he can not breathe out, without forcing the breath out, making it impossible for him to fall asleep. He has told his doctors several times to no avail. So he has had a CPAP machine, as well as 3 different masks for 3 years (that I have to dust weekly), which gets zero use, and he still snores like a freight train and wakes me up all night long -- like RIGHT NOW!!

UPDATE on my sleep apnea. It is better and I've gotten more used to wearing it. I mostly just have trouble getting the head gear adjusted right when I have to get new supplies every 3 months. It's either too loose and air leaks out or too tight and leaves marks on my face.

I must say it took a long time to get used to wearing this thing. I can understand why so many have problems wearing it night after night.

The people in my household are really grateful for me wearing it as they do not hear me snoring anymore! At first they checked on me nightly to see if I was dead because they did'nt hear me snoring, but now they've gotten used to not hearing it.

Am a nurse an if your are having problems with the mask your doctor is going to be like deal with it because you have to have it due to it can cause more health problems later on. However. Go to the people you bought the machine from. They should have fit you for it. They have so many new mask that have different feels and shapes that may feel better. My dad has this and gets medicare so we had to get his through a mail order place where it was free. But the lady on the phone was very nice and it did take a while but we finally found one he could wear. And believe me it was worth it to find the right one. So please do not give up. Go to the place where you get your replacement mask ask them for help and like I tell all my patient if you have to get mean. It is your health they have to listen to you don't let them ignore you. If they do find another doctor who will listen. I hope this helps. Oh I did see this news report where there is a procedure to help now i think a eyes ear, nose doctor can help check into it because they say after about 5-6 months people dont snore anymore. maybe someone it will work for. I hope this works. but always ask your doctor
