Vaginal Douche?

Contributor: Sweet-Justice Sweet-Justice
Would anyone say that its safe and probably even cleanly to get one while on your period? Sometimes I wonder if it would help speed my period along because I bleed like Niagara falls and it last more then a week usually.

I have never used a douche during my period. I am not sure if that would help. But, I have tried using a douche twice, and each time I had a painful reaction. So, I would not advise on using douches at all.

I hear that they're really bad for the vaginal health because it messes up the natural "environment", if you will. Vagina's are self-cleaning and they don't appreciate it when you try to help

I used my first one on Thursday night the next day I started my period and was off my period the next. I had a period that lasted one day. Which is odd my periods usually last 3 days at least. I don't know if the douche had anything to with it or not. I had bought the wal-mart brand douche. I only used one I still have three left and I am taking the remaining douches back to walmart so I can get my money back.

I've heard only negative things about douching so I never tried it and don't recommend it if it is done with a solution other than lukewarm water only.

I agree, I've always heard that you shouldn't use douches because they mess up the natural occuring good bacteria and chemistry in your body. If the extensive bleeding is an issue (and I totally understand why it would be) maybe you should talk to your gyno. They have birth control pills (if that's an option for you) that can help lighten your flow available these days. I hope you find something that works for you!

I hear that they're really bad for your vagina to douche, especially on your period.

I agree. I have never done a vaginal douche. It flushes out the helpful bacteria that fight infection and maintains the ph balance.

Even for anal douches, I heard it is unsafe to do more than one a week.

My mom taught me to never douche - but I remember when I was little and she had crazy, crazy periods that would drag on for 10+ days and her doctor told her that it might help her out. I don't know how sound that advice was - doctors aren't infallible - and I don't know if she did it, but it was mentioned.
I don't think it would be a good idea. If you're bleeding, that means there is still tissue and fluid in your uterus that is coming out and I don't think that introducing a douching solution is going to help. If it's dragging on and on, you might have a hormonal issue. Under normal circumstances, your vagina is perfectly capable of taking care of itself - and your uterus will get rid of it's lining on it's own timeline. Having said that, if you've got periods dragging on and on, you should talk to a gynecologist.

I don't use them. I don't feel putting perfumed stuff inside my body is good for it. Though, I usually only have my period for maybe 4 days.

Thanks everyone who posted. It sounds like for the most part it could just lead to trouble so I'll refrain. In other news yes my period does drag on for 10+ days at a time. I would talk to a gyno but I don't have the money to go I'm actually quite poor, but I'm in the process of trying to get help and then that way I can go and possibly get a prescription for birth control.

NO! The healthy vagina is pretty closely controlled and you shouldn't do anything to mess it up.

I used a douche twice and got a UTI from it. Also it used to be considered cleansing but it has been proven that they are not good for you. *Wonders where P'Gell and Airen Wolf are* Lol they usually have great medical advice

Sound advice from everyone here. When getting birth control going to your local health department is the most cost efficient way of going about it and the staff is very knowledgeable, just don't expect the nicest bunch (although there are plenty of nice people who work there, they are just overworked).
Using BC has helped me immensely because I too suffered from painful, long periods until I started using a pill. I'm now on the patch and couldn't be happier!

After reading issues that the douche can cause, I have never used one and NEVER will! It's not necessary or worth the health problems that often result from it.

I dont like the idea of a douche. I think you should let your body clean itself, and let your period flow as it wants too. But I hear you with wanting speed it up! i think sex helps I have heavy but short periods 3or 4 days, and it seems sex makes it bleed more but over faster?!

Regular vaginal douching changes the delicate chemical balance of the vagina and can make a woman more susceptible to infections. Douching can introduce new bacteria into the vagina which can spread up through the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes. Researchers have found that women who douche regularly experience more vaginal irritations and infections such as bacterial vaginosis, and an increased number of sexually transmitted diseases.
Furthermore, regular users of vaginal douches face a significantly higher risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) -- a chronic condition that can lead to infertility, or even death, if left untreated. Bacterial vaginosis and PID can have serious adverse affects on pregnancy including infections in the baby, labor problems, and preterm delivery.

p.s. My grandmother douched all the time. Back then it was popular and you were thought to be unclean if you didn't. She had douched so much that she had chronic vaginal irritation. Bet that was GREAT for her love life...LOL. My personal moto " If it isn't broken, dont fix it"!

Ditto. I only hear bad things about douching. I'm pretty sure it's just a marketing ploy
