What is the best vaginal wash or cleanser to use? either after sex or daily?

Contributor: kaykay0427 kaykay0427
I want something that will make me feel fresher down there... especially after sex or my period... I get itchy and get a faint smell all the time and I don't know what it is my doctor told me nothing is wrong but it's really annoying. Would a Vaginal wash, wipe, or cleanser help?

No, that will make it worse. Vaginal "cleansers" are really bad for you and can cause problems like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. If you are getting itchy after sex, it could be that you are allergic to a product you are using. Sometimes I get itchy if I leave lube to dry, so I always wipe it off or shower and then it goes away.

In the summer, especially after a workout I notice that I get a fairly strong smell as well so I started using the Summer's Eve cleansing wash that you can get at your local drugstore. I spent a while standing there in my local CVS with my mom reading the different labels and from what we could see it is a wash that helps to restore your pH level which can cause smells. I have been using it for over a year (the same bottle at that since you only use a dime size amount) and I love the way it works. It helps mask that smell and I feel much cleaner in general. I use it every shower, so every other day.
Obviously when it comes to our vaginas we should use caution. I would recommend doing some research into the things you are using that could possibly be causing this itch you mentioned. You could try the Summer's Eve wipes they sell before investing in the soap if you wanted to make sure it won't irritate you at all.

I just use the regular soap I'm using for the rest of my body. Usually plain old Dove white bar soap. And I would advise against cleaning inside the vagina for the same reasons mentioned above, I'm only referring to the outside parts here!

I do tend to shower (or at least do a quick body-cleaning) more during my period, which helps. Also, if you don't shave it may help to give the hair down there an extra good scrub just to make sure it's not keeping any scent in it.

This. Cleaning inside the vagina is almost always a bad idea - it's a self-cleaning environment and even just rinsing it out is bad for the microorganisms that work to keep your bits healthy.

Douching or cleansing your vagina will upset its pH balance and probably make things worse. You could go from slightly itchy/odd smell to full blown yeast infection.

If it helps, I have found that my diet influences how I taste and smell. When I cut back on junk-food (and especially refined sugar) and try to eat a lot of vegetables and drink a lot of water, things smell and taste a lot better. Maybe a change in diet would help?

My lady bits even get upset with soap so I just use hot water and my fingers while in the shower to give it a good scrub down.

After my period, I will douche with summer's Even, but everyday in the shower I use Vagisil light and clean feminine wash. It is just for exterior washing. I usually feel dirty if I don't use it.

I never use douches or anything, but I quite like Sliquid Splash as a general cleansing of the genital area, though not internally. Unfortunately it was discontinued here recently :\ but it works really well for me, leaves me feeling clean and fresh and all that good stuff!

Agreed! Seriously, your body is a truly amazing thing and it really doesn't need a lot of help especially in that department. Diet is huge, if you eat a lot of carbohydrates and yeasty products like bread and beer you're going to be feeding any infections you might have. In a perfect world we'd only eat fruits, veggies, quinoa and wild caught fish, but that's unrealistic for most people (even me!).

If you have an issue with vaginal infections and smell this is what I'd suggest:

Eat lot's of yogurt or get some pro-biotic drinks or pills. That will help regulate you're good and bad bacteria in your vagina.
Drink lot's of water and try to cut back on sugar.
Celery makes you taste sweeter (works for guys too!)
If you do have a yeast infection douche with diluted apple cider vinegar (preferably the organic kind). This works great!
Putting plain greek yogurt up there helps get rid of yeast infections too!

Good luck!

Super diluted tee tree oil also works great, just put it on a cotton ball and wipe the outside of your vagina. It's naturally antibacterial and smells piney. I use that sometimes if I'm not feeling so fresh.
