Would you date someone who had an STD?

Contributor: Tessa Taboo Tessa Taboo
When I met my husband, I knew I was going to marry him. I just knew. We were attached at the hip for MONTHS before we even really started dating, or even had sex. Had he told me that he had an STD, we would have found a way to work around it, because no matter what, I was not, and am not, living the rest of my life without him.

No, and I don;t feel bad or shallow for saying that. I have to take care of me, and my body. I plan on having kids, and don't want to pass on an STD to them as well. Its not mean to say no, its self-preserving.

Never, I don't want to catch anything, it isn't worth the risk

For me, it depends on the person and the STD.

Not worth it to me to take the risk of contracting it.

If they were a person i wanted to be with, then i would be with them. But depending on the STD, i might not want to have sex with them.

It depends on the person and the STD. If I really liked them and it was something completely curable, then I'd probably say yes.

This is a really challenging question, but I think I would.

I absolutely would. The stigma attached to STIs is completely tragic and not fair to the people with the misfortune of having one. Just because you have an infection downstairs does not mean you are undesirable or undateable. Safer sex practices and the elimination of a high risk activity or two is all that needs to happen.

I wouldn't. I don't want to risk catching anything myself.

No. If it was something treatable, then I would hope they'd get it taken care of, but something like Herpes or HIV, definitely not. It's just not something I want to deal with

I don't know. I never did and I don't plan on dating again since I'm married. I guess if I thought the person and I would end up being together forever, it would impact that decision. That's a tough one.

It depends, especially when I consider bacterial infections that could be cure vs viruses.

I'm not sure. A family member of mine dated a fantastic guy that was HIV-positive, but they ended up breaking up because of the increasing pressure to be sexually active (using a condom, obviously, but still...). If it were just me, I'd probably date someone with an STD as many of us have been lucky to test negative for them after the stupid risks we take. However, I'm a single mom, so I wouldn't want to risk getting an STD that might kill me or make me unfit to take care of my daughter, and condoms aren't completely safe.

I agree with this.

No, I would not. I am currently dating someone who has been treated and cured for an std in the past and I don't have a problem with that.

If someone knew they had a treatable std and just refused to get it treated I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be attracted anyway...

I first thought no on instinct but there are a number of STDs which are very common and not particularly detrimental to the relationship as I see it. And a few most people will get in their life time anyway.

It depends on what kind of STD. And how great that person is.

If the person was really something special, yes. In fact, I have. In every sexual situation we were very careful and I remain STD free.
