How do you judge the size of a toy when shopping online?

Contributor: Leil@ Leil@
Size question… always one of the most important when it comes to sex toys.

Have you ever realized that the size of the toy was way off from what you had imagined, only when it arrived? I'm sure you've faced such an issue, especially at the beginning of the journey.

Comments like: It was too big to use; Need something smaller (yeah, yeah, the "the bigger, the better" doesn't always work here ), or on the contrary: The product is too small; Made for a small member; Just way too tight; A lot smaller than we thought are not rare among the novices.

So, how do you determine what toy size is best when buying online? Let's pick up some life hacks to figure that out and help beginners save their nerves and money

On some toys there is a "view in real size" option that is very helpful! You put a credit card (or dollar bill, or ruler) up to your screen and adjust it to be the exact size as necessary, and the toy shown on screen will be the same size as it is in real life. I also have a measuring tape that I use if I'm not sure of how big something will be.

Oh, yeah, extremely helpful!

When buying my first penetrative toy, I was too shy to take my guy's measurements, so I needed to be inventive in order not to fail with the size.

I used my fingers to see how many I liked to insert comfortably. Thus, I had a good idea of what my body would accept and like in terms of the diameter. However, this trick didn't work for the length since my fingers are not long, but I felt I could take it deeper. So, I decided to buy a realistic dildo that was not too pricey, so I won't regret it if it doesn't fit. It was 1 1/4" in diameter and about 5" in length, a pretty standard size for beginners, which worked well for me. It was my go-to toy for quite a long time.

I judge the size from the specs while choosing. I even pull out my tape measure.

How about you guys? How do you choose your stroking machines?

I don't dabble in strokers much- so can't be of much help.

For insertable toys where size can make it or break it- I use a tape measure in conjunction with my toy collection. I keep the specs on my plugs and dildos and assess what I am seeking in length/girth for future toy purchases.

Stroking machines or stroking toys? Regarding the machines, we've found that these are generally very loud, almost to the point of killing the mood. It's very difficult to get the right amount of "tip action" but also stroke the shaft all the way down. Also, it's difficult to get the right tightness; many are too tight and it seems to slow down or even stop. Regarding sleeves and manual strokers, we haven't found the perfect one either. Most are simply too short, so the tip comes out and gets no attention. The longer ones typically have a sealed base or fit into a plastic shell and are often bulky and difficult to manage well. With so many options for females, it seems like somebody would get it right for the males. As for now, my man says nothing beats the real thing!

Always looking for ideas....

Great approach! When choosing a new , I also rely on the size of the existing toys, and it always works

I usually recommend considering wing-type toys such as Utopia, Handler, or Wingman to men with bigger members. Due to their soft wings that are designed to hug the shaft, they will fit any size. (Handler and Wingman are out of stock now, but you can always set a "Notify me" alert to know when these are back).

Another item I'd recommend checking is the life-size toy - X5 Roxanna. It has two entries, and each is approximately 7-8 inches deep. Moreover, it is made of soft material, so it will not cause any discomfort even if you reach the end of the tunnel. One of the users mentioned in his review that he had fisted it easily, so it should fit girthy members. It should be a perfect partner for solo sessions

Hope it helps!

I still face such issues.
What helps me is images and the gifs such as middle one up to determine size and how to use toys. Images that are are moving even the drawn ones help understand the use of toys.

I'm almost completely filled with an inch an a half. One inch is to small but a decent tease. I do enjoy them all.

The "view in real size" feature can be helpful but personally I have a very difficult time conceptualizing size from online images. Since I am fortunate enough to have a pretty large toy collection, I check the specs of new toys and compare them to the specs of my favorite toys. For instance, I know that my favorite insertable vibrators are usually at least 1.5in diameter, and some of my favorite favorites are 2in. Anything in the 1 or 1.25in spectrum is unlikely to be a favorite of mine. Length is a bit easier to imagine than girth; I will compare it to favorite toys but a tape measure or ruler also works pretty well. I recommend holding the ruler up against your hand to help imagine it.
Oftentimes when buying toys I have something specific in mind - e.g. "I like this vibrator that I already own but I want something with a little more length/girth," etc. Figuring out what you like or dislike about your current toys' measurements helps with picking new ones.

I used to go to the specs page, take out a tape measure (one you'd get in the crafts or sewing department that is foldable), and hold up the diameter or length measurements. However, if I was still unsure, I'd write down the measurements or mark them on my foldable tape measure, go to my nearest sex store, and find a toy that was closest in measurements. That gave me a visual of what to expect. Especially for plugs! I remember ordering a plug online and it was massive! I still can't use that one fully yet, but it makes a nice stretch for the next size down though.

A tidbit for the stroker question. Measure yourself before you buy. You don't want things too tight and since you'll get harder before orgasm, you'll want some room for growth. You can always go to your nearest sex store and ask an educated sales person about noise. Since toys cannot be returned, their policy should be to open the box, put batteries in it, and show you the noise level and that it works. Some can be pricey for quality. My husband just bought a pump for $100+ and when he brought it home to use it, he said it was great, BUT, when he popped it off his erect self, it made a sound like popping the top off a bottle and he was like "ouch!" I don't think he's used it since, but it may be just because he was ready to go and was in a hurry to take the pump off.

I always view the real size but it really is hard to gauge by that. My method is to reference dimensions of my other toys and take incremental steps up. Works very good- in many years of toy buying I only grossly overestimated once, and bought a toy that I have never been able to use at all. And after that I decided to baby step up in size and have never had another problem.
