Sex Fact: Choosing your Sex Toy

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
In her book, Tristan Taormino talks about the different ways to go about choosing your perfect sex toy. By dividing it into easy-to-navigate sections, she talks about the different ways that you can choose your toy.

First off, you should consider the functionality of the toy. What you want the toy to do will make a huge difference as to what toy options are available to you. With toys made for vaginal penetration, erection enhancement, strap-on sex, anal penetration, clitoral vibration, g-spot stimulation, and toys of other options, you want to know what you want to do your toy to do.

Second off, you should consider your style. With all of the different shapes and designs out there, know what type of toy would interest you. Do you prefer them whimsical? What about realistic? Would you like a toy with advanced technology like rechargability or music capability?

Finally, you should also consider the cost, durability, and the size of the toy. Everyone has their own budget, and you should know what you plan on spending on yours. The price of the toy will help determine the durability and how long it will last, so make sure you know how long you want this toy to be in your toy chest. Don't forget to pick a size that will work for your body! Sometimes, those toys can look small in the picture but are huge in real-life, so make sure to check out the measurements and the Real-Size widget to get a good idea of the toy.

I don't know if I consciously use that process to determine what I buy, but I know that all of these factors come into play, so I suppose I do.

The first thing I always look at is what it looks like and how much it costs. Then I look at the size and the material it is made out of. Then, lastly, I read the reviews on it.

I always pick my toys by the function I want, the size of the toy and then cost. Occasionally I buy on a whim, but generally I want either something I know I will probably enjoy or something I am curious about. Edens has helped get me out of that same style toy rut.

Appearance is what catches my attention and makes me look at a toy more closely. Size is what I look at first during an in-depth examination, since I want to know that I'll be able to actually use it. Then comes material and functionality, the degree of importance between the two switching places depending on the toy (usually material is more important). Price is kind of the last thing I look at, since I can always save up for it.

I have to confess style and color often play a pretty big role. Don't get me wrong, if a toy isn't safe/durable, or a bad shape or size for me, I won't buy it. But I'm attracted to toys that make me happy when I look at them.

The main thing is obviously function. Even if I browse around at different things out of curiosity, when I'm actually looking to shop, I tend to have a specific type in mind (rabbit, clitoral only, etc). After that, I'm probably looking for a specific size or design, and price is always a factor for me.

We look at all of them! But function and longevity are definitely the big ones!

For me, it's design first. I peruse the site, see all the toys, and if one both looks pretty, and of good shape, then I look into it. See if it's good functionally, cost size, that sort of thing.

Now that I know what shape works for me best, the choosing has got a lot easier for me. I simply look for that shape in dildos and vibrators alike. If it is a vibrator, I look at the vroom factor, which must be at least 4, preferably 5. There are not many toys that fill the bill, so this makes my choices very easy.

We've just gotten started with toys and this was a big help. Funny that three of our first four items are vibrators...

I definitely take all these into consideration, although, size, style and functionality seem to be most important to me. Some I've considered look amazing (I like realistic) although size ends up being intimidating! >.>; Also, I like a toy that can serve many functions. Vibrations for sure, but something that's also fun to play with without needing to use the 'on switch'!

I look for something interesting that catches my attention. It has to be kind of quiet and fairly strong. I look at what it's made of and what kind of batteries it takes. Then I like to look at what other people have said about it.

Size is important, but not the most important thing for me. Function is definitely capital for me. If I'm bored with it, what's the point of using it?

Functionality is the most important, but appearance is what usually catches my attention first. Then I read up and do some research (and consider cost!) before making any purchases.
