Yes, we usually have music on because I don't live alone. However due to that we are sort of used to it and often put it on even when we don't need to. Our favorite type to listen to is very loud rock.

Also have music on because of him having a roommate (my place is off-limits for anything sexy - I've got parents hanging about). He usually has it on a world jazz station or the like, with lots of indie stuff. I hate the background music when it's on the radio ... because it's damned awkward trying to get into a groove with a Home Depot commercial playing ...

I feel like background noise is so distracting. You'd have to find a playlist that works for both of you, or chance the radio. It's happened for me with a movie playing in the background, but that can get really really awkward depending what type of movie and what scene. It's easy to get thrown off.
