Are fake nails sexy or skanky?

Contributor: sweetpea12 sweetpea12
What do you think about fake nails, sexy or skanky? My nails are peeling and I get hangnails all the time. I'm sick of it and thinking about getting fake nails but short like normal nails. The money isn't an issue, but I just want to know what you guys think about fake nails?

I know some guys like them, but they gross me out. Doesn't matter how good a job the manicurist has done, they look fake, thick, and skanky. Someone once called them fake plastic talons for swooping on a lake to catch trout!

I prefer nice, short(ish) natural nails myself. Painted is fine. My suggestion is treat yourself to a nice manicure. Your natural nails are much more sexy than chunks of plastic.

Fake nails are all the rage these days. Guys and girls who like them, more power to you. I respect you are entitled to your tastes. Just not my thing.

Depends French tips and shorter fake nails can be CLASSY but anything that limits the use of your hands in daily functions, cooking, cleaning, typing showering thats just trashy

I don't like fake nails -- they're just too long. I think it's because I grew up always having to cut my nails short because I played the piano, but I like shorter nails better. I like fingers that still have a nice long shape even when the nails are short though (so, thin, elegant fingers).

The natural looking ones can look nice if they're done well. But I don't like the ones the girls on Jerseylicious wear. LOL Those look skanky to me - they're too long, too wide and too fake looking. I have a friend who wears fake nails a lot, but hers actually look really natural.

If your nails are kind of weak, I think getting fake nails will make them weaker. I had fake nails once, for my brother's wedding - they made my strong natural nails a mess until they totally grew out.

Have you tried the nail strengthening treatments? You can often get them at the grocery store, maybe those would help?

I say skanky - I prefer natural because the fake ones are so obviously fake - well to each their own...

It depends. The 9 inches long neon pink nails might be a bit too much for me. But cute nails of a reasonable lenght, why not? I mean, if you can't grow your own nails or they break or peel or flake, it might look better than your own nails grown "long". I know when my nails flake off I don't want to grow them long, so I cut them, take supplements and take care of them while they grow back.

It really depends on your hands, tbh. I have long fingers, and french tips make my hands look gorgeous. I never get them ridiculously long, though. These days, I keep them natural with just a clear coat on them.

Anyway, try it, and see what you think. If you like them, keep them. If not, oh well.

i just got my first set of gel nails last week. they are clear with green and blue sparkly tips. they are fairly short and square and so far haven't gotten in the way of anything but picking up tiny things like earrings off the floor. i got them because i work on call at a sex shop and my hands are on display every time i touch a toy. same for when i do video reviews. i think they make my hands look cleaner and more feminine. plus it was great fun to have my girlfriend do them! but yes until i saw the girls at the store with the short versions i always thought they looked silly and high maintenance- little did i know that they only have to b redone every month to six weeks whereas doing my own polish means i have nasty hangnails and chipping colour that looks way more unattractive. btw if anyone lives in B.C. canada- i have over 100 bottles of nailpolish free for the taking!

I think if they are shorter than claws and done classy, they are very pretty. I personally don't do them because of the glue and I already have brittle nails, hangnails, etc like you. I just keep them short, use the cuticle cutter to remove the hard skin from the sides before they become hangnails, and paint them myself. Have you tried the gel stuff? My mother just tried it and it's lasted a month already without peeling or cracking.

I don't think they look skanky, just really uncomfortable and impractical if really long. Some fake nails look really great and I especially like ones that are made up artistically with nail polish and stuff.

I think fake nails look skanky and dirty. They gross me out. So much crud gets stuck underneath long nails and I think they're gross. They make it difficult to do normal daily tasks and I just find them annoying. I prefer my natural nails with a nice manicure. Wearing fake nails a lot definitely takes it's toll on your natural nails. My mom always wore fake nails and when she had to take them off for a different job her nails were paper thin and were painful to the touch!

I'd suggest soaking your hands and just giving yourself a nice at home manicure. Use a clear coat or some kind of nourishing calcium coat. They have all different kinds of clear polish that are good for nails.

I think fake nails look ridiculous. I've never seen a single pair that don't look fake. Most are really overdone and trashy. I don't see the point in them either because they limit your finger usage. I see cashiers who have them, but yet have a hell of a time pushing the button on the register and bagging. I find it annoying when I get handed my change and scratched with those dirty things. How do you not poke your own eye out? I just really don't like them.

Plus not to mention I know people who complain about not having money, yet every two weeks go get those expensive things done. Paying $50 every two weeks for something that silly and not having money for food is ridiculous!!

Totally agree here. The other thing to fake nails is that if they're not done right, underneath the fake nail you can collect all sorts of dirt and grime that's really difficult to clean out due to the glue--which is why lots of work places, like hospitals, don't allow them.

Go for real nails nicely manicured.

I have natural but I like fake as well, usually for the intricate designs because anything simple I can do on my own nails

Aw, wish I lived in B.C. I'm an addict. I love gel/glitter sparkly tips. They make my hands look feminine as well and I love that they sparkle so much, especially in the sunlight.

I would suggest trying to care for your natural nails. Many nail salons are basically chop shops that will grind your natural nail to nothing with a Dremel tool. If you decide to remove the acrylics, your natural nail will be in awful shape and will take forever to recover. There are many great strengthening products out there that address peeling such as the Nail Tek line:

Also, moisturize! Use lotion frequently. Dry nails are even more brittle than usual.

Invest in a good quality crystal file such as this Essie one:

Crystal files actually seal the nail tip and prevent peeling and snagging.

As a lover of women, a lab geek, and a cellist I'm not into it. I don't like the way they look or feel. Natural is very nice.

It depends on the nails. If they are short and have a classic paint job.Its fine. if they are long and have a bad pint job not so much.
