The first aid vibe is made of plastic. It is food-grade material, hypo-allergenic, and latex and phthalates free. There was a very faint smell on the vibe from the storage container, but that was gone after one cleaning. The texture is mainly smooth around the tip, with some ridges around the base. Although the ridges do not really do a ton as far as sensation goes.

Again, I would love to point out that getting a plastic toy at this price point is a pretty good deal. Plastic toys are an 8 on the Eden safety scale. I would also like to mention that this toy is a great novelty item because of the case; the fact the vibe is pretty decent is a total bonus (especially if you are giving it as a gift!)

Keep in mind that plastic is a pretty hard material. If you plan on using plastic toys for partner play, I do like to warn newbies that your partner (if inexperienced with what you like) may get excited and ram you with the toy...and if the toy is plastic it doesn't feel too good to be pounded by it. This vibrator is multi speed and controlled by a basic spin dial at the bottom of the toy. It opperates on just one double A battery, and the battery lasts a decent amount of time, although the vibrations do start to dull after five or sex hours of use. The toy is average on noise and power, and I am not personally a huge fan of spin dial toys because the dial is easy to bump at the "critical" moment. Plastic is a pretty hardy material, and care and maintenance are pretty simple. Your first aid vibe can easily be cleaned with antibacterial soap and hot water or by wiping down with isopropyl alcohol, and is compatible with all lubricants. It will not break down if exposed to heat or light like jelly toys do, but you should still store your toy in an average temperatured place.

The one semi-difficult cleaning issue is making sure you clean the ridges in this toy well. It really isn't a hard process, but is is not a simple rinse either.
