Blinded by the Light

The Silk Sashay Blindfold by Leatherbeaten is a beautiful well crafted blindfold that can be admired by beginning and advanced users. Beginners will be especially appreciative of the non-threatening design and comfortable materials. (Un)fortunately it might be possible to open your eyes while this is tied tightly, but if you don't try to open your eyes, this blindfold will work brilliantly.

Use

The Silk Sashay Blindfold by Leatherbeaten is intended to be used as a blindfold during sex for a new sensory deprivation experience. The non-threatening nature and soft materials make this blindfold great for beginners and advanced users. However, it is possible to open one's eyes while wearing the mask, so this blindfold probably isn't the best for any hardcore BDSM play.

Theoretically this blindfold can be used as a sleep mask, but it moved a little too much for my liking. While awake, this motion is not an issue, although the position of the blindfold might have to be adjusted every so often.

The Bottom Line: This blindfold is a beautiful luxurious piece that most will appreciate. This product is high quality, but its functionality rests in the eyes of the user. If you keep your eyes closed, it will block out the light. If you try to open your eyes while using this blindfold, you will probably see out through the bottom.

Design / Craftsmanship / Material / Size / Fit

The blindfold is a beautiful red and black floral/dragon pattern (note that it also comes in other color schemes). The blindfold consists of a center piece and two silk straps - one at each end of the main unit. The center piece is strong, but fairly thin. The back is covered in a fleece lining and the edges are wrapped with a synthetic fabric for protection against fraying etc. I would not suggest pulling against this blindfold with any abnormal amount of force as it might stretch the fabric.

This is a well designed albeit somewhat decorative blindfold. Under normal usage conditions it should hold up for many years, however excessive yanking with a decent amount of force might harm the fabric. The silk on this blindfold is extremely durable. It's not the silk from your grandmother's scarves! Like the silk from the Silk Sashay Cuffs, the silk should not fray or pull although some wrinkling is inevitable (wrinkles can be steamed out). The edges of the straps are also reinforced with a running/cross-hatch type stitch that should keep them from fraying. For some reason the stitching is imperfect at the tips in both the mask and in the Silk Sashay Cuffs (maybe it's harder, I don't sew...) however this shouldn't impede its functionality.

I would imagine that this blindfold would fit all users because the straps can be adjusted to individual head sizes. The nose hole is fairly wide so it should accommodate everyone. I can fit this mask easily over my head, and it stays in place pretty well. It does move around a little during use, especially when turning from side to side.

As I mentioned before, it is possible to open your eyes and see light. This could be a bonus for beginning users or a demerit for advanced users. However if you keep your eyes closed, this blindfold will hide the light.

Performance

This mask actually performed better than I expected. I expected a beautiful piece, but I didn't expect it to stay on my head/work. Since the toy is made of silk, I expected that it would slide off my head but I am happy to report that it didn't happen.

The fleece under the head piece is also extremely soft. I did expect this since it looked like, and was, the same fleece that is present on the silk sashay cuffs, but it felt even better on my tired eyes!

Care and Maintenance

There are no directions for cleaning this mask so everything I say here is unofficial. Steaming this product to eliminate wrinkles should be OK. If you do happen to spill something on it, try to blot it up with a towel. A very small amount of water could be used to get the stain off the mask, but I would try to avoid water altogether since it is generally good practice to keep water away from silk.

I store this product in a ziploc bag away from sunlight. Theoretically sunlight could fade the colors of the mask so try to keep it out of direct sunlight.

This mask shouldn't require too much maintenance, however the silk straps are bound to wrinkle either from storage, or from use.

Packaging

The blindfold came in a very simple ziploc type bag with a simple Leatherbeaten cardboard piece. That's it. In this case, I believe the packaging is a huge positive. The fact is that a pouch for this product simply isn't needed. In fact, I would recommend storing this in plastic because the plastic prevents dust/dirt from coming into contact with this beautiful blindfold.

There are no instructions, but all you have to do is tie the ribbons together until the mask sits on your head.

Personal comments

I got this product hoping that it would match the Silk Sashay Cuffs, even though those were pink. You can see a comparison of the two products in my video review. In my humble opinion they do "go" but they definitely don't match. The pink and the red don't completely clash, but it is clear that the cuffs and the blindfold are not from the same set. In use, this probably won't matter much. Hopefully I'll be able to get the cuffs that match the dragon blindfold exactly because well, I love matching things. Unfortunately Leatherbeaten doesn't have a blindfold made with the same material as the Silk Sashay cuffs, so this one is the closest on the market.

Also, the flowers on the Silk Sashay Cuffs are different from the flowers on the blindfold. The blindfold has an oriental "feel" whereas the cuffs do not. All in all, they would work nicely as a set, but don't expect them to match exactly.

I love this blindfold. I deducted a star because I was disappointed that light could get in. But when I kept my eyes shut, this point was mute. This is a luxurious product and I would endorse it to anyone!
Follow-up commentary
My opinion on this hasn't changed much. It's a blindfold. It works. It's gorgeous. I'm eventually going to get the LELO blindfold. But not yet.

I always wondered if this would slide off easily. Glad to hear it doesn't. Great review!

    Thanks Sammi and Newme!

It definitely doesn't slide off easily if it's tied tightly but it's definitely possible/easy to slide off if you're trying and nodding your head on the knot ::just:: right. But that is to be expected with blindfolds with ties/elastic bands.
