Soft, stretchy...OUCH!!!

I wanted to be gift wrapped for the Mrs. and I was. However, it was an uncomfortable gift and neither of us could really enjoy the experience. The feeling was worse after washing/drying. The design is a nice idea but poorly executed.

extremely useful review
Let's get this out of the way: First, my husband wrote this review as they were his boxers and second, there are many problems with this pair of "present boxers" by Coquette. First, there is no size chart available--probably due to the fact that Coquette is primarily a company that produces lingerie for women (which, in my book is a plus). I did check the Coquette web site and found no mention of any male items. End of the sizing story. I usually wear a medium underpant but the Mrs. says I have been growing a few inches (and I do admit it but what can you do when you live with such a good cook?) so I ordered the large.

The overall look of the boxer shorts is fun--the forest green matches nicely with the red (but not too bright) ribbon/bow that is wrapped around the shorts just as you would wrap a present. The problems start with the green velvety fabric having quite a bit of stretch and the ribbon having no stretch...can you see where this is leading? I did order a large and it was just a bit too loose, but the ribbons still cut into my body in a very unpleasant fashion. Everyplace you see the ribbon, it binds and leaves a mark when I take off the boxers. The ribbon that runs from the back, through my groin and up the front to attach to the bow squeezes the boys and not in a nice way. I know the ladies are reading this and I am trying to be delicate here (as I wish the red ribbon were delicate).

The fabric is made up of polyester and spandex, but I did not catch the percentage of each on the label. I wore the boxers around the house for at least 3 hours before feeling the absolute need to remove them because of the discomfort. The Mrs. washed them the next day and I tried again. Much to my displeasure, I found that the green, soft, stretchy areas remained soft and stretchy and did not shrink BUT the red ribbon seemed to shrink and made the boxers more uncomfortable to wear. Also, after machine washing and drying, the areas where the green fabric and the red ribbon connect started to pucker, probably due to the uneven shrinkage. I am guessing there is no spandex in the ribbon which accounts for the uneven shrinkage. I did not try them on under trousers because I just know that it would have been more uncomfortable.

I am not sure how to recommend choosing a size. While the green part runs true to size (I would back down to my usual size M with no hesitation) the ribbon makes me want to say size up and I am sure I am more comfortable (although not comfortable) with the size L. They are not falling off but do tend to slide and need adjusting while wearing. If I were wearing trousers along with the boxers this would be more of a problem. I am not recommending these boxers at all, so I'll leave the size choice to you.
Experience
This was not a pleasant experience but I did want to wear them a few times before writing this review. I do not know when they became available on EF, but I just recently noticed them. It seems most appropriate for a Christmas gift because of the green/red colors. I suppose you can also see them for Valentine's Day with the red bow wrapping up your guys package. I will put these aside for awhile, test them out again and do my follow up review but I do not anticipate any changes in the comfort or my opinion.
Follow-up commentary
Although these have been worn and washed several more times, they have not improved with age. The material is wearing thin in spots and the fabric shrinks in different ways in different spots. Putting it plainly, they hurt and dig in not so nice spots. He still has to pull them out of the crotch and we just plain don't like them. They don't look good and they certainly don't feel good.
