Sex Toys 101

This is the perfect intro course on sex toys—it could be called Sex Toys 101. It has basic info on the human anatomy, sex toy types, uses, safety, etc.—all presented in a simple and fun manner. To keep it interesting, the book is colourful and visual. A minor issue is a lack of variety in the photos. What this book will do for beginners is give a fun intro to sex toys and help them see what it is THEY want (or don’t want) from a sex toy, and just for that, this book is great.

About author

This was our first experience with Tristan's work, and we quite like her style. Both my partner and I immediately got into this book since it's so straightforward and such an enjoyable and easy read. Tristan is able to get across all necessary information/facts without being boring/dry and overly complex, so we're definitely huge fans of her writing style.

Content / Style / Audience

Firstly, my partner and I really enjoyed the style of this book. When I say style, I mean that in two ways: first, the writing style (which is simple and fun to read) and, second, the design (which is colourful and filled with quality photographs).

This book was basically our introduction to sex toys. I'm not sure how someone who is completely "anti-toy" would react since I don't know if they'd even be willing to read the book, but if you somehow convince them to read it, I'm sure they'd find something they would at least be curious about trying. My partner and I had already been curious about trying out different toys, so when we ran across this book, we figured it'd be a good read for us as an introduction of sorts. It felt like a fun introductory course to sex toys—from all the different types to suggested uses, to the author's top picks, to safe use, etc.—it covers it all.

Obviously, this book isn't one you'd leave lying in front of family and/or friends unless you don't mind them seeing the explicit cover and images, but hopefully that isn't a problem for most—surely you have a place to keep things that aren't meant for everyone's eyes.

My one complaint about this book is the lack of variety in photographs. My partner and I aren't a cisgendered male + female pairing, which is all you'll see in these photos. No same-sex pairings, let alone trans* men/women. However, this didn't come as a big shock, so it wasn't really a big deal to us. All necessary information is definitely there, which is the most important factor. The fact that it's also written so well is what seals the deal for making this a must-have for anyone wanting an intro course in sex toys.

Design

This is a hardcover book, so I have no worries about its durability/quality.

Lots of colour and photos, along with the author's writing style, definitely help make this book extremely interesting to read.

As mentioned, had there been more variation in the types of people shown in the photos, the book would have been pretty much perfect for us as newbies to sex toys.

Personal comments

I'd recommend this to anyone relatively new to the world of sex toys.

Experience

Thanks to this book, my partner and I had a much clearer idea of what we did and did not want out of a sex toy—which qualities were musts/must-nots and which were optional. We were much more confident about making our purchase of a sex toy than we would have been otherwise. With experience, our requirements/desires of sex toy qualities are evolving slightly, but we were able to shape our basic ideas/desires into specific requirements for sex toy qualities thanks to much of the information read in this book.
Follow-up commentary
Everything I said in my original review still holds, and the additional cool part is that some of my friends (the ones it was appropriate to share this with) had a great time taking the "sex toys course" from this book as well.
