Darn It, I Need More Length!

The Taffeta Dot Corset by Coquette is a lovely corset at a great price. I love almost everything about it...except the length. Since I like wearing corsets out in public, it's important that the bottom of the corset covers both my hips and gut. This corset does neither. It's still a nice corset but I think I'll have to keep this one for bedroom use only until I figure out a way to add to the length.

The Taffeta Dot Corset by Coquette is available in sizes S-XL. I purchased the XL with the intention of wearing the corset beneath a nice cardigan or shrug while out in public. I do this with most corsets and bustiers as long as they are not sheer or too revealing.

The outfit arrived in a clear plastic bag that didn’t have any photos or text on it. The corset was attached to a padded hanger, which is excellent to use to store the corset when it’s not being worn. There was a small zip lock style bag as well as a cardboard tag attached to the corset. The tag has a fewphotos of a model wearing the piece and states the company name, website, product name, size, and colour. The little zip lock bag held the 2 detachable shoulder straps.

The corset is 100% polyester, exclusive of trim. The material is not sheer, nor is it stretchy. The only stretchy part of the corset is the shoulder straps. The width can be adjusted with the lacing down the centre back of the piece. I’ve taken a few measurements of the corset laying flat. If you need any other measurements, please let me know and I will get them for you.

Detachable, adjustable shoulder strap length: 8 ½ -15 ½ inches each
Chest (armpit to armpit): 16 ¼ inches
Cup length: 5 inches
Cup width: 8 inches
Length of corset (taken down side): 14 inches
Length of corset (taken down centre back): 12 ½ inches

The corset has 2 closures to it. There is lacing down the centre back of the piece with a black ribbon and there are metal hook and eye closures down the centre front. There are 6 hook and eye closures at the front, which are a silver coloured metal. The lacing down the back can be loosened if the wearer needs more width, though the more you need to loosen the lacing, the more skin will be exposed since there is no panel behind the lacing. The measurements of the corset above were taken with the lacing tightened (no skin showing through).

There are flat metal pieces that run the length of the corset at the centre front. These pieces hold the hook and eye closures. The rest of the boning is a flexible plastic. There are 8 boning pieces in total: 4 in the front that slant inwards, 2 at the back that run vertically beside the laced area, and 1 on each side of the corset above the ruffled hip area.

The boning pieces that are at the side of the corset do not run the entire length of the corset because they end at the ruffled hip area. These bones are 7 inches in length. All of the bones in the corset have lace trim to them. The trim sits 3/8 of an inch away from the bone on each side. You can see the lace besides the boning in the photo below.

The shoulder straps are adjustable in length and are also detachable. At the bottom of the inside of the corset, there are 4 loops that you can attach garter straps to: 2 in the front and 2 in the back. The shoulder straps were included but I did not receive any garter straps with this corset. So you’ll need to have your own already available, or just wear the corset without garters. I personally don’t care about the garter straps because I wear these types of pieces in public.

The chest of the corset has padding and underwire in it. The cups feature the polka dot pattern that the entire corset has, but the top of each cup has 4 tiered black ruffles. The ruffles on the cups face upwards. This ruffled part of the cup has a total length of 2 ¼ inches. There are also ruffles similar to the bra ruffles that sit at the hip area. There are 6 tiered black ruffles on each hip. The ruffled area at the hips measures 5 inches in length. Below is a photo of the ruffled hip area.

The corset fit me well and was comfortable to wear. However, I did have to really loosen the lacing at the back for the width that I needed. Even though I loosened the lacing a lot, there was still more lace available to be loosened even further.
Experience
...continued

I had to put the corset on by myself because my partner wasn’t around. It was a bit tricky but I was able to finally get it done up. What I did was loosen the lacing a bit down the back, then tried to see if the clasps at the front were close enough together to do up. If they weren’t I’d loosen the lacing a bit more and repeat. Eventually I had loosened it enough to close the closures down the centre front of the piece. So you can put this piece on by yourself, but it’d be a heck of a lot easier if you had someone to help you with the lacing at the back.

The one and only issue I had with the corset is the length. Since I wear these types of pieces in public, I can’t have my chunky hips and belly sticking out the bottom… and they do in this corset. If the corset were just a bit longer at the sides and front, I’d be so happy. I refuse to wear this out in public with my chunky areas not being covered.

My C cups fit well in the cups of this corset. I assume a D cup could fit the chest as well but nothing larger. Below are a few photos of me wearing the corset. Please excuse my chunkiness. It’s the length of the corset’s fault!

You can see in the first photo that there is a bit of skin showing through the hook and eye closures down the centre front. I would have liked the corset to have a flap of material so that the skin wasn’t showing though. The ruffles on the hips do highlight the area but I don’t really think they make them look that much larger than they already are. I have wide hips without the ruffles. I feel like the ruffles just make my chunky hips look cute. The photo on the right hand side at the bottom shows how much I needed to loosen the lace. Like I had mentioned, there was still a bit of lace left over if you need more width.

I found the corset to be quite comfortable and the material did not bother/irritate my skin while I was wearing it. The care tag states that the outfit should be hand washed only. I assume that the corset should be hung to dry.

Overall, I think this is a great corset at a reasonable price. I’ve deducted only one star from the rating because it lacks the length I need. I like the way the corset looks on me so I’m going to have to try and figure out a way to wear the corset without so much hip and belly hanging out the bottom.
