Thomas More introduced the term “utopia” into the English language with his 1516 book by the same name. More saw his utopia as being an unreachable, ideal place or state of affairs. California Exotic’s Utopia on the other hand… let’s just say it’s not going to usher in a perfect society, but it’s a very good first step in moving us all in the direction of universal happiness.

The first thing to note about the Utopia is its heft. It weighs a full pound and that’s noticeable. It shouldn’t tire your arm out with normal use, but the weight does lend a certain sense of reassurance to it. The bulk improves leverage and gives the Utopia a nice sense of balance when using it for penetration.

The Utopia is not only heavier than many other rabbit vibrators, it’s also noticeably thicker. That doesn’t mean you have to be a size queen to enjoy the Utopia – far from it. Its 1 5/8-inch diameter is roughly the same size as most average dildos and vibrators. The Utopia’s width does mean, however, that the rotations are very easily felt. Whereas you might use the highest rotation settings with a thinner vibrator, the Utopia’s thickness means you can have a similar set of sensations from lower settings.

The bulk of the Utopia’s rabbit is quite firm. It’s possible, albeit not particularly easy, to move the rabbit so that the bullet rests directly on your clitoris. The easier route towards clitoral stimulation is taking advantage of the fact that silicone conducts vibrations very, very well. The two rabbit ears vibrate almost as strongly as the bullet itself. With the variety of vibration settings available on the Utopia, it’s easy to combine clitoral stimulation with penetration.

Like most battery-operated toys with multiple functions, there is a certain slow-down when multiple functions are used at once. If you turn the vibrations on maximum and do the same for the rotation you will have decreased performance. With the Utopia, however, the slow-down is less marked than in other, less well made toys. It’s definitely there, but not to the extent that functionality is seriously lessened.

One way to work around this is by paying attention to the batteries used. Quality batteries really do make a difference.

Many rabbit vibrators require a certain learning curve to know how to angle the toy to its advantage and the Utopia is no exception. The vibrator doesn’t automatically shift into its best position – it takes some time and practice to figure out which angles work and which ones don’t. Whether or not that takes minutes or hours depends on the user. Those who don’t enjoy that kind of effort may be frustrated. Those who find learning how to use a toy part of the fun will like the chance for exploration with the Utopia.

The control panel is a thing of beauty. Turning the toy on requires one push of the lowest button and all three buttons are instantly illuminated in a lovely blue glow. Three pushes of the top button provide three different rotation speeds. The vibration button offers seven different functions, ranging from a basic hum (with three different intensities) to escalating pulsations.

All of the buttons are very easy to find and use even with the Utopia inserted. The size and placement of the buttons make them easy to push even when your hands are all messy and goopy from lubricant, vaginal fluids, or whatever else you may have going on.

The three AA batteries are very easy to insert. The Utopia’s battery case is protected by a cover similar to those found on medication bottles. You don’t turn the cover in a full circle to remove it, but simply rotate it a quarter of an inch and it releases on its own. It’s convenient, but also designed for little hands. Those of us (ahem) with larger hands won’t find it difficult to open, but getting a grip does take some practice. The batteries are placed in a removable case that has +/- alignment clearly marked.

The Utopia is made from “premium medical grade Japanese silicone.” While I haven’t found any information on what makes Japanese silicone different from, let’s say, German silicone, its texture and properties are a lovely addition to an already very good vibrator. Like all sex toys made from silicone, the Utopia is non-porous. You can share it with others (be sure to wash and disinfect thoroughly before you do!) and the Utopia can be cleaned with soap and water or toy cleaner.

Be sure to avoid silicone lubricants when using the Utopia as the general rule of thumb is that silicone toys and silicone lubricants just don’t mix.
