We use a combination of implements - all leather - no canes or wooden paddles. The lineup includes;
1/2 wide flogger for a thuddy feel & a 1/4" flogger for the sting;
a 24" & a 14" long riding bat - one for regular use and one for close in (the short one is my wife's favorite because she stays pretty close to me);
various paddles (4) that run from 12" to 24" and are mostly 3" wide - our newest has 30 flat metal studs that offer a variety of uses from the feel of cold steel - to the hot impact of leather and metal.
My favorite is the Tawse - ours is a split Tawse that provides quite a sting and is quickest to leave marks.
She also has a Wartenburg wheel that she'll use to strafe sensitive skin between impact sets.

I enjoy receiving spankings and paddling quite a bit.
I have a large heavy paddle, riding crop and a "Slut" impression paddle. In time my partner will become more and more comfortable with it all. He enjoys giving bare hand and bottom spankings but hasn't been with someone so into kinkiness yet so it's all a learning curve but we're getting there. Soon the toy box will fill with floggers, dragon tails and nine tails

Also if you get into a real spanking, your hand is going to get pretty sore - the goal is to make his ass sore - not your hand!

I would really love to try a tail style of implements. So far experienced only bare hands and light paddles.
Gunsmoke is right - the hand gets sore pretty quickly, but with the hand, you can control the angle and the power of the spank much more effectively. Other implements require experience.

Your comment about 'tails' may be referring to floggers. The 'tails' are called "falls". We have two that we like. One is the Icicles #38 glass handled flogger. The falls are long and rather thin. When wielded with some vigor it provides a stinging feeling. Although we've never tried it, the glass handle can double as a dildo. We also like it because it can be quite pleasurable when the falls are used to simply dance across the skin - no impacts. It's great for nipple and genital stimulation.
Our second flogger has 1/2" wide falls. It gives a totally different 'thudding' feeling upon impact. Because the impact is spread across the total weight of the falls, you actually have to swing kind of hard to produce any real pain. It's good for getting a nice red glow to the skin without a lot of pain - unless of course you want pain, then just swing harder.
You are correct, both require practice - but it's all quite fun. Don't forget to communicate - we don't need a safe word, simply indicating you your partner if it gets to be too much is easy to do.
If you want some real pain - try a 2 or 3 finger Tawse.

I mostly spank my girl with a bare hand on her bare bottom, but I also like to use a broad hairbrush if she’s been especially naughty. We’ve played around with other implements, but those are our favorites.
