I have a few glass dildos and I've never had any of them break. They're usually really sturdy, so as long as you don't drop them on a hard floor or fling then around they should be fine.
Since it's your first I would recommend one that's fairly small in diameter and without sharp curves; glass is a lot harder than jelly, silicone, plastic, etc and is a different sensation. I know if I'd started with a big glass toy immediately I'd have been overwhelmed because they just don't have the give. Once you get used to it, though, it's awesome.

The phallix g-spot wonders are fantastic. I have one. I dropped it once on a tile floor and it didn't break. They're probably not as fragile as you're imagining they are.

Well Gunsmoke - I decided to buy the lucid heart one as a start. Of course, it is out of stock.

Unfortunately good glass toys are expensive. I have found that if you know what you want and do an internet search for that specific item you can find the best price among many vendors. I'm kind of loyal to EF - but I understand your concern. I tried a search for this toy but everyone I found charges the same $70.
