Any reason for not liking Wordpress? Not judging, but just want to get opinions out there for people who may be using this thread to set up their blogs.

Agreed - design flexibility was my real drive to self-hosting. The plugins that can be added to Wordpress are also a great benefit - if you can imagine something that might be helpful to know about your blog or add content to it or whatever, someone has probably made a plugin to do it.

You certainly don't need to know PHP or CSS, or even HTML to use Wordpress though. The more you learn, the more you can do, but there is lots of functionality even for the beginner.

Blogger.com does allow adult content. (I'll post about it in a bit.)

Having your own blog can run from $20 a year upwards of $200. It really depends on hosting.

If you're looking for a host, I use Crash With Me ( link ) It's run by a blogger who buys reseller packages, and a couple other sex bloggers are hosted there. The prices are ridiculously great, and I think I've only experienced a day of downtime, total, throughout the past year. I love it. I just renewed for another two years.

Most places give you a free name when you purchase space, otherwise they are usually like $12-$15 a year. I haven't shopped around for space in a while but I pay like $120 a year for unlimited. You could probably find some cheaper places now too.

The two most popular free blogging hosts are Wordpress as well as Blogspot. Those blogging hosts will accept any type of blog. Blogspot has a adult-content policy that requires a warning before your visitor can view your blog, but Wordpress does not allow "pornographic content". The problem with this wording is that it's up to the individual as to what "pornographic" actually entails. In the past, this has gotten some adult blogs deleted with no prior notice. Kinky Blogging is a new host that is run by an adult blogger. It's still in beta, but the host will allow adult content with no danger of it being removed for being adult since she runs the servers herself.

Paid hosts really vary. There are hundreds of blog hosting sites out there. The prices can range from $3 a month to $80 a month and over. The biggest thing to consider is if the blogging host will be okay with adult content. Look around for the best deals, ask opinions of your other blogging friends, and e-mail the company with any questions including whether they accept adult sites. It's better to be safe than sorry. You can usually start with a small package that costs less, and you can upgrade to a more expensive plan if you find out that you need it.

For me, I run my Kinky-World review site. I chose to pay for my own hosting to allow me to have the most freedom when it comes to the content on my site. Of course, I have more freedom when it comes to content, and I seem more reputable when it comes to my reputation, but at the same time, it does cost money instead of being free.

With your type of hosting, what would you say are the advantages or disadvantages?

I tend to change my layouts often - maybe every three to six months or so - but I always use professionally built layouts. The one I have running right now is made by Elegant Themes. The pro built ones tend to have massively elaborate control panels that will allow you to do everything in one spot.

Coincidentally I just changed the template today ...

When you want to own your own site, there are two steps to the process.

First, you need to buy the "name" (the link), usually charged per year.

Second, you need someone to "host" all your files (the content of your website) and "serve" your information to other computers.

You don't have to use the same service for each of these things (though it can be decidedly easier to do it this way).

I find that Wordpress is easier to format and set up as opposed to Blogger. Wordpress does require you to kind of know what's going on HTML wise with coding. I know that I had to go back to my HTML book to figure out how to format a few things.

Blogger is easier to use, but I find Wordpress to look cleaner.

For a newbie, I highly recommend buying domain and hosting in the same spot. I've done webdesign for awhile now, and I hate attempting to deal with separate domain and hosting.

Wordpress looks so pretty. I don't think I could ever go back to Blogger, but Blogger works well for those who don't want bells and whistles.

I purchased my site name from Go Daddy. I also use the Wordpress platform, which I really like. My friend hosts with some of his other sites on Hostgator. It hasn't gone down once on the past 7 months. It's great!

Hurrah for the mentions of Dreamhost! I've been using Dreamhost for years now. They have great service and unlimited hosting plans. I get a free domain name every year. And they have one click installs for Wordpress that make setting up your own blog a snap.

I highly recommend them. They've treated my blogs well.

I love all the plugins I can use with self-hosted WordPress. I couldn't do half of the things I wanted to on Blogger. The amount of freedom you have with hosting your own blog with WP is SO much better than any free site.

Wordpress.org copies now allow you to export your Blogger files into Wordpress for easy transfering onto Wordpress. So if you go from Blogger to a paid version of Wordpress, you're good to go. I'm not sure if it applies to free versions of Wordpress.com though.

I chose free hosting, as I was just stepping into the blogging world I didn't want to and didn't think I should be paying out a lot. I always have the option to buy more storage in the futute when needed, but it comes with 1500MB free storage which I find is a good amount to start out with.

When my site starts bringing in revenue (via affiliate links, donate button, etc) then I will look into putting more cash into my site.

It's like learning to crawl before you walk.
