Hey Laurel! I panicked when I got here and couldn't find the link to the discussion! I think in the holiday madness I forgot to send it to you!! Sorry!!

So, I have been reading Opening Up ( I am still not done) and I love it! I've always had fairly unconventional believes about monogamy and how so many people seem to fail at it. This book has reinforced and helped fully form some of what I've already believed to be true.

My bottom line impression is that even if you have no desire to open up your current relationship in any way, this book helps spur open and honest communication with your partner about how you feel about him or her, the relationship itself, other people... etc.

The one thing that being in an open relationship taught me was the vital importance of constant communication and honesty, for any relationship.

lol I kept waiting for it, searching, thinking I must be missing it. Then I just decided perhaps you were going to create it when you got here at 7. It's been a long day for me, so I apologize if it was here somewhere already and I missed it!

That sounds like a book I need to read. I do believe in always communicating with your partner. I just sometimes have a hard time doing it.

Thanks! I haven't been able to be online all day-- the snow kept my babysitter home and one year old toddlers don't allow for computer time... I'm going to start answering questions tonight!!

Please do stop by and ask me ANYTHING!

I think Tristan's book is an important conversation starter for any couple considering taking the plunge into an open relationship. It's not mainstream and certainly not something to be discussed at most dinner parties. It's nice to have a guide that offers a practical, thoughtful approach.

Would you consider being in another open relationship (if you're not currently)?

I don't think I could be in an open relationship.

Absolutely.

I was in an open, long-distance relationship for 8 years. Since then, I've had several less serious relationships with people, none of which have been exclusive.

Some of them have been in deeply committed partnerships which hasn't always been an easy thing to navigate, but I don't know at this point, under what circumstances I would choose to be in an exclusive, monogamous relationship.

It's certainly possible, but it would be surprising.

Fair enough. How about a one-time threesome?

I wouldn't definitely read her perspective on an open relationship before completely saying no.

Do you think a long-distance relationship is more conducive to an open relationship? Less jealousy or risk of confusing friends and family? (I know several people who are in open, long-distance relationships.)

Absolutely! I also found that it is a great resource for family to understand what is "going on" with non-monogamous relatives.
'Course that is for the open minded relatives cause if they are not wanting to understand and MUST judge I have found no rational is ever going to make sense to them. It's always going to be about not haveing 'self control'.
