Reviewers Spotlight - JR, Sammi, and Stormy

Contributor: Ansley Ansley

Hello there, and welcome to our sixth month long Reviewers Spotlight! Except, it's not really a reviewers spotlight so much as a spotlight on the staff at Edenfantasys. Why? Because you asked for it!

How this is going to work is that you have all month long to ask JR, Sammi, and myself questions. We'll answer when we can, and you can keep asking until the end of the month!

JR’s biography:

Howdy!
I started with EdenFantasys in October 2008…wow, four years already?! I didn’t get involved right away, but my ex did. She’s the one who introduced me to EdenFantasys. Once I got involved though…I was hooked! She eventually was hired to work with Gary on the review program and that led me to getting hired too. Such a lucky break!
When it comes to my duties and tasks here…let’s just say it’s a LOT of stuff. But my main job is to make sure things run right for everyone and no one has an unanswered question or unresolved issue.
I’m a nerd. Really. I have dice with more than 6 sides. I play role-playing games…not in the bedroom though. It’d be awkward to write up a character sheet for that. I do the Live-Action stuff too.
I the proud single-cat dad of two boys – Dip and Fidget. They’re my “special little guys”.

Sammi’s biography:

I wrote my first review for EdenFantasys way back in February of 2008, and I've been working for EdenFantasys for almost 3 years (in November). I'm the Community Development Coordinator, and many of you know me from the EdenTasks proofreading program. I'm married with 2 kids and 2 dogs, so we're constantly running in circles. Free time is something we cherish, as you might imagine. I love horror movies (the bloodier the better, but I've probably seen them all) reading, and writing, and would love to be published some day. I also love to bake and make chocolates, but leave cooking to my husband. We recently celebrated our 20th anniversary where we got married, in Las Vegas. We even renewed our vows in the same chapel!

Stormy’s biography:

Hey, hey! I wrote my first review for EF in March of 2011; I joined the team as a staff member in March of this year when Sam (we miss you!) decided to pursue other things. My official title is Community Administrative Assistant which is a catch-all for brainstormer, thread-starter, and resource for the community. I’m married, no kids and no plans for children at any point in the future. I spend a lot of my time online reading current events and scanning various gossip sites, but I pretty much live at Eden. I love to cook and take care of general household things and while I don’t have a lot of hobbies, I have a large toy collection and an even larger collection of opinions. We have no family pets to speak of, but we do have a plant! A healthy, green plant that I’ve vowed not to let die; it’s a cordyline hybrid. (Whatever that is.) Hubby and I watch a lot of B-flicks and often use movie quotes in conversation as replies.

The plant:

I am so excited!! I will gather up a few questions for each of you and let ya have at them--soon. Got to get some good ones going!

JR--Love your kitties!! They look like they have a bunch of personality and attitude!!

Sammi--Ohhh, your puppies are precious! They look pretty playful and friendly!

Stormy--Doing great on the plant! My hubby and i have one he gave me when we first got together, 17 years later it is still alive. There is hope if I can keep one alive that long!!

Whoooo! JR totally deserves to be up here, I can't even count the times I've bothered him in the bit-over-a-year I've been here. 'This isn't submitting right,' 'This isn't letting me request it,' 'My ridiculous student wants me to send you product requests one at a time that all have 5 reviews *dies*,' 'Fix my life for me!' I wish I could buy you donuts or something.

Stormy is awesome, and always is willing to talk if you have a rage about someone/something that's going on. She's also always willing to go talk to people if we run into some glitch, which is awesome!

Since this is my first round of being an editor, I have only spoken to Sammi a few times, but I hope for that to become a more common thing!

If you could all change one thing about Eden what would it be?

Thanks! I know it seems like all I do is make forum posts and keep people from jumping off ledges but it's a lot more than that. A lot of behind the scenes stuff...

As far as what I would change about Eden...not much, to be perfectly honest. It would be nice if we had better turn outs for club events, but I know it doesn't interest everyone and is time-consuming.

JR! What's you're favorite D20 based game? I have a character in D&D and one in the Star Wars RPG but I don't get to play nearly as often as I'd like, I don't have enough people. Also there's actually a book that explains the rules of sex in D&D, including new feats to take and everything!
It's on Amazon but only used, and I've never actually read it myself just heard about it.

That's a tough question - I'm not sure that I'd really change anything, but I'll have to think on that a bit

Ok...~cracks knuckles~

JR- Have you actually been able to use that red throe of yours or has Dip claimed it in the name of Cheezeburgerz?

Sammi- Do you have any cute stories about kids or dogs and your stash?

Stormy- The plant...will it become an indoor garden? There are some really nice varieties of small peach trees and tomato plants, jus' sayin'

Funny that you say that because I asked hubby if there were any mini-trees he might be interested in and he said there were a few. It will eventually turn into an indoor garden. We want cacti and that kind of stuff. Just makes everything feel nicer somehow.

The only reason we don't have a cat is because there isn't a good place to keep the litter box that isn't out in the open (gross). Eventually we'll have another cat. And I so can't wait!

Thing is...I really don't TT that much. Too much LARPing I guess.

I started on 2nd Ed DnD when I was like 10 or something. I think 3.5 is my preferred edition now...when I play. I had d20 Call of Cthulhu, but never got to play it.

I heard about that DnD book for sex stuff. When there are 4 guys sitting around a table, sex is one of the LAST things on my mind.

Well, I have been single since last November. I still tested the product out for the review, just more...privately.

No, Dip hasn't gotten it yet. I've tucked it away until I can use it as intended.

...I have a date tonight. I'll just leave it at that.

It seems that there is a lot of work to do to keep everything running and you all seem very dedicated. I assume this must be more than a 9-to-5 job? Do you also check-in on the weekends?

It really all depends on what's been going on throughout the week. If I'm on during the weekend, it's usually because I'm doing contributor activities instead of work related things. If I happen to notice something that needs an answer, I'll pop into a thread for a moment.

Yeah, definitely more than a 9-5, but's all good. I like my job. I don't usually put in time on the weekends, just long days.

There are a couple contributors who have my contact info on Skype and they pop on "It's 9pm WHY ARE YOU STILL WORKING!?!". I love this site. It doesn't always feel like a job.

These are for all 3 of you!

How has your participation on-site changed since you changed from contributors to employees? Do you write reviews as much as you used to? And has your opinion/style of writing reviews changed as your roles all changed?

I don't get to read as many reviews as I would like to as much anymore. Mainly, because when I was a contributor I could spend eight hours on the site and not bat an eye and do nothing but read reviews. I still write a couple every month, which is plenty.

I think the biggest thing for me that has changed as far as preferred review styles is I've become quite fond of brevity. If you can get your point using few words, I'm much more likely to read the entire thing and vote. I just don't have the time to read very, very detailed reviews. If it's a toy I'm really interested in, then I'll skim to the experience section and make my decision that way. I still feel people should embrace whatever voice and style they are most comfortable with.

Awwww good luck on your date, have a great time, and may the boys approve of your choice! (We all hope the kids will love the new person in our lives, makes it much easier to canoodle when your fuzzy kiddo doesn't need to be locked in the other room!)

For all three: Do you ever get discouraged when it seems like everyone is asking for certain programs or changes but then they seem unwilling to spend a little extra time on the site to actually participate in these programs?

Dip likes her. He took almost immediately to her! Fidget was...Fidget.

I'm making dinner: baked ravioli, potato salad, brownies. I should consider a vegetable or something too...
