Recently, Daniel Tosh was heckled during one of his shows after performing a joke about rape. In response to the heckler, Tosh said it would be funny if she were gang raped by five guys right then and there.

Daniel Tosh is notorious for being over the top in his comedy routines and it's probably safe to say that if you're at a Tosh show, you're bound to hear at least one majorly offensive joke. Same if you were at a Lisa Lampanelli show.

But, we have to ask you:

I get that people make rape jokes purposely to be offensive, but to tell someone it would be funny if they were raped? Not. Cool.

I don't like rape jokes in general, but I try very hard not to let them bother me as I am of the belief that one cannot control what others do, only the reaction you have. If I get super offended by rape jokes, I feel like I'm just giving more power over to an experience I don't care to give power in my life anymore. So I choose not to be offended, as hard as it can be sometimes. Do I think they're appropriate or that people should make them? No. I just also don't think I can control what jackasses do to be "funny."

Under no circumstances EVER do you tell someone you hope they get raped or that it would be funny. It's not just that it could be offensive, it's just plain inconsiderate, uneducated, and tasteless.

Rape is NEVER FUNNY. It takes a heartless person to make a joke out of it. It doesn't make any difference if they're a Comedian. Being a Comedian doesn't give you a license to be an ass to other people, although, plenty of them are. Yes, I know my statements may sound judgmental, however, rape is a degradation of women and damaging to their body, spirit, mind, and emotions and should never be made a joke of. It is totally irresponsible for anyone to make a joke out of such a devastating experience! This isn't a matter of free speech , either. It's a reflection of how some many people are still so blind as to what rape is & the irreversible damage it does to a person.
As far as the heckler, she had to know she was taking a chance with the ass responding to her heckling if she knew his style of, if you want to call it, humor. She still didn't deserve that horrendous response!!!

The ass made a statement in self-defense of the crass "joke", quote: “there are awful things in the world, but you can still make jokes about them.” I don't care if making this type of joke is so prevalent in our society. This is a perfect example of how our society, as a whole, still has no comprehension of this hienous crime. YES, RAPE IS A CRIME - AND IT IS NOT, NEVER, THE VICTIMS FAULT. It's so typical to blame the victim: "if she hadn't....." It wasn't her choice to be raped. It is THE RAPIST'S CHOICE. And we really don't have the power to "make" anyone do anything - universal truth .

I understand the truth about giving our power to another. For me, my comments aren't about giving away my power - it's about using my power. I don't have to passively accept what others say or do. I have not only the right, but also the responsibility of putting out there, the reality of something our society, as a whole, is so desensitized to.

Interesting response. I think Roland realizes the gravity of the situation and he isn't necessarily defending it, but where is the line? I mean, the whole point of comedy is to make you sit up and take notice of social situations that are beyond our normal scope.

If being raped were a choice, it wouldn't be called rape. That being said, I do wholeheartedly agree that we have zero power to make anyone do anything. People don't make us feel a certain way, we decide to feel that way.

I, personally, choose to never be offended unless directly attacked/provoked.

Right. So if I were the woman in question, I would have NOT been offended by the original joke, but WOULD be offended by the statement afterward as it was a personal attack. As I'm not the woman in question, I just generally feel it's in bad taste.

As for having power through words and such, I get that. The thing is, I spent a lot of time being offended and trying to get others to see how offensive they were. It didn't change anyone, it just left me angry all the time. I don't believe I have a responsibility to relive something over and over again that I don't care to to raise awareness or anything like that. And I think that those who do choose to raise awareness should do so in a calm fashion lest people go "oh, they're just easily offended" or something else. The calmer we can be in saying "hey, that's not cool and here's why" the more likely it is that someone might actually listen. YMMV.

Well, I think the woman was rude in her response. It's like she was begging to be directly attacked. Depending on how the artist feels that night, depends on the power behind his punch.

The whole situation is unfortunate, really. And now we've got Dane Cook cocking off at the mouth over the Colorado massacre...did he learn nothing from Godfried?

The heckler chose to be there. She would have had to have known that Daniel Tosh would be offensive. He makes his living off of being offensive in a funny way. The act of being raped or raping someone is not funny. Never. If you see someone being raped, no, it is not funny. Saying something is a whole different story from actually doing.

In America, we are desensitized. That is why Daniel Tosh has made it big and has his own television show. He has a net worth of $1.5 million because people enjoy that he "goes there". Many movies make fun of the idea of prison rape. For example:
Office Space: "federal pound me in the ass prison"
In Let's go to Prison, Chi McBride as Barry rapes Will Arnett as Nelson Biederman. That is how they even fall in love.

Sorry... Gotta play Devil's Advocate here guys.

No, and you're right to do so. That's the whole point of Roland's article. Prison rape is acceptable (hell, just read the lyrics to Stinkfist by Tool) to joke about, but raping women isn't. It's a double-standard.

I love Daniel Tosh. I think he's edgy, I think he's immensely hilarious and I love how he's comfortable enough to push those boundaries.

I didn't see what she said exactly. If she was rude, then perhaps it begged a snarky reply. Still not sure that thinking her being raped would be funny is an appropriate response when perhaps something non-rape related could have sufficed?

I agree with the fact that she should have known she might get offended by something he said, thus the reply that the original joke should have been brushed off. I don't find prison rape all that hilarious either (I do love me some Office Space though), but I'm not gonna tell people they can't say something about it. I won't tell someone they can't say something about non-prison rape either, but I certainly do think all those jokes are in poor taste, regardless of the fact that I don't get "offended" by them. I don't get offended by lots of things, but that doesn't mean people should go around cussing every word or talking about rude/vulgar/whatever things all day either.

I've never fully understood why some people go out of their way to offend and then make a living doing so. I wonder if it's not partially because of the media attention they get when they cross the line and people do take offense? So in way, the offense you take is fueling the fire of their success? Yet another reason I choose to look past it.

Ok, so Devil's advocate then. I didn't hear the joke and don't know what the context is. I prefer my comedians very edgy. Try Doug Stanhope or David Cross or Sarah Silverman (who is vicious about race and rape and Catholics, but hilarious). A comedy show is a "show"; an act. I don't know if I would find this guys performance funny or not, but at an elemental level this is protected free speech. It is always hardest to defend free speech when it is something one finds personally distasteful, but this right must always be defended. Regardless if someone says "cunt' in a rap song, or denies the holocaust, or whatever. My best way to show my personal objection is to not buy the book, or ticket to the performance, or CD.

I agree with this. I'd also like to invoke one of my favorite quotes: "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." Yay for free speech.

Still going with that I find it personally distasteful, and that I wouldn't be going to shows that joke about such things. But, yeah, I fully agree that free speech should be protected, no matter how offensive said free speech is.

There's a reason it's called a joke and not a wish but it for Tosh and the heckler, it goes both ways. If she attended the show knowing she'd be seeing him, she can't have been surprised by what he said that resulted in her heckling him. To be honest, it's rude to do so. His comment seems a bit _____ but if I were on stage and someone did that, I'd say something to, maybe not to that affect though.

Rape jokes are too harmful to be truly funny. They shouldn't be outlawed, free speech blah blah, but those who insist on telling them are subject to the free speech of others telling them off. That said, when someone's on stage, it's the rare occasion when the audience has a right to more than a simple boo -- other audience members paid to be there and good manners should dictate most public behavior. And that said, a performer should be professional enough to ignore a heckler, and not hurl sexist/racist insults and threats of violence.

Everyone was wrong in the specific example. The heckler was less wrong only by degrees, and only because she was standing up for something important, which is noble, although I disagree with her methods.

And that's why I like you. Instead of making it a big thing and giving him more attention, you would have brushed it off. This woman knew what she was getting into, you don't interrupt a comedian during his thing. If what he says sucks, his performance is on him. When you challenge him, of course you're gonna make the little guy want to retaliate.
