I have the inflatable vibrating butt plug (check out my review) and it doesn't work for me that way. The part of your anal anatomy that's the tightest is the sphincter. The anal canal and the rectum are naturally wider. The plug doesn't expand in the neck where it's surrounded by sphincter muscle.

I've seen people inflate the plug and take it out once inflated - that can be used to stretch the sphincter but it's no different from using a larger plug.

That said I like the sensations I get from this plug and consider it a good purchase.

If you're trying to "expand" to allow for wider girth, then the inflatables probably won't do it for it. They are designed to expand inside the rectum for a full feeling that some people like. They are not designed to stretch out the sphincter. If that's your goal, I think you might consider a butt plug with a thicker neck and leaving it in for a while during foreplay.

I'm very intrigued with them, but all of them I've seen are latex (which I can't use) and I've also heard too many stories about them breaking after so many uses.

I second what was said about the plug not stretching the sphincter. If you want to expand, you'll want an inflatable dildo rather than a plug. A strategy some people use is to insert the dildo while it is still fairly small, then start adding air to slowly enlarge the toy and slowly stretch you out. Worked out great for me. The other option would be to get an anal trainer kit that consists of several toys in graduated sizes but most of them are very small.

I have tried one but found it more of a hassle than anything. I'm sure there are better ones now but the one i had was latex material, yuck. Way back when i was new to anal. I was thinking the same thing, i could use it to expand and stretch to work my way up to larger things. Overall it was not pleasurable. The full feeling was nice overall however. But as others said it will only stretch on the inside.

What worked for me was just working up to larger size dildos. Not too much larger at a time. For example, if i was able to take a 1 inch diameter dildo easily i'd just move up to a 1 1/2inch diameter dildo and slowly work it in. Lots of lube, stop at any sign of pain because that's no good. Also finding a good position to allow you to fully relax yourself to allow easier stretching helps. For some its being on top riding, doggie style, missionary, and so on.
