Have you ever gotten a UTI from a sex toy?

Contributor: Pumpk1nPatch Pumpk1nPatch
My urethra is sensitive to everything and I'm a frequent urinary tract infection sufferer. I was wondering if anyone thinks they may have gotten one from a toy especially made of a material that's lower on the safety scale. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I've been avoiding buying less safe products because of it.

I've gotten a UTI from my wife - it was after a very long bike ride and my immune system was at an all-time low.

Nope. But all my toys rank high in safety, and I make to sure wash them right away.

Oh yeah, I know what it's like to have a super sensitive urethra & everything else down there! I get a UTI after any medical procedure, even a gyno exam! Turns out I was allergic to the products they used to sterilize the area, the material for the instruments & the lubricant. I would swell up & all the natural microbes would get out of balance & the bad microbes would proliferate. Interestingly enough, it wasn't e.coli like a typical UTI. Anyway, I get UTI's or yeast infections & rashes, as a reaction to almost ANYTHING I put down there! Lubes, toys, etc., are all suspect. I have found some silicone toys have given me a UTI, but it just has to do with the company's formula. I have high end silicone I can't use & others I can. Glass has never given me any problems & I still need to find a lube, (I'm still narrowing it down on ingredients to find that to what's causing the negative reaction).

You are wise to avoid the less safe product materials with your history. Interestingly enough, I have done very well the the TPR toys I have tried, so go figure! I can make some recommendations for you, if you want. If you use a sex toy cleaner, or an antibacterial product, make sure to leave it on the surface to work for about 2 minutes, no less, otherwise it doesn't do anything more for you than soap & water. I also recommend washing away all residue of the toy cleaner, if you use one, because even traces of them, or of wipes, can cause irritation.

I highly recommend the cranberry capsules you can buy over the counter, (I would be happy to give you the name of what I use every day). Taking them everyday will provide a barrier in your bladder preventing any of the bad from growing! But, the effect only lasts as long as the fruit acids, (proanthocyanidins), are replenished regularly, so best results are from taking it every day! I have toyed with them, on & off, thinking I knew better & let me just say, I will never be without them, ever again, it's just not worth it.

I should mention, as long as I don't use toys other then glass& don't have any procedures or have lubes applied there, I never get an infection or irritation. It's definitely the physical trauma &/or the topical products causing the problem. I recently discovered a very popular ingredient in lubes, Propylene glycol, (AKA propanediol - they are trying to hide it on labels now, by calling it by it's other chemical name & stating it's all natural, yeah well, so is poison ivy , right?), is a huge irritant for me. It's in most lubes & even cutting that out, I still have minor problems. I'm going to try organic coconut oil next, (it is antibacterial & anti-fungal & has been used all over the world as a sex lube). I do okay with silicone lubes, I just can't safely use them on my silicone toys. I have tried it, but I'm afraid to ruin an expensive investment.

Make sure you aren't developing an allergy to latex! That's how I started & why I never was able to use toys back in the day.

After a bad experience with a jelly toy, I've stuck to silicone ever since.

I only use silicone, glass, and stainless steel. I haven't gotten an UTI yet.

I haven't gotten a UTI from a toy. I try to stick to safer materials and I clean my toys very well with toy cleaner every time I use them.

I've never had a UTI from toy play. I'm sorry that you and Wicked Wahine have this problem. I just have an extreme allergy to jelly toys. Seriously, everything BURNS. I hope you're able to narrow down the material cause, and find a happy medium.
