A single well lubricated finger is the place to start - before going on to toys, I'd recommend working to 2 fingers - it will not be as easy as it sounds.
Then we went for small diameter 3/4-1" plastic vibrators. They are cheap, easy to clean and smooth. Because I wanted to get into pegging, we needed a way to stretch me a little - that's where tapered toys like silicone butt plugs come into play. We bought a 1.25" one - but didn't stay there long before getting a 1.5" with vibrator.

If you haven't started with a finger yet then that's the best way to go. Play around with it a bit, figure out what he likes. Thrusting play, stationary finger, pressure against the prostate, rocking against the prostate... once you figure this out you can look for toys that will provide similar sensations.

he should spend some time experimenting on his own. buy a small plug, practice putting it in, practice leaving it in for some time. get a bigger plug. it's not about stretching, it's about learning to relax. he should become comfortable on his own with how to relax, what he likes, does not like...his limits. then he can share what's he's learned and the two of you will enjoy it much more. he's likely to hurt himself, and it's better he do that to himself than you do it to him. fyi, it's like being kicked in the nuts for your ass, but it fades...and he'll learn how not to force it.

You could try a slim butt plug. The Mood Naughty small isn't much wider than an average man's fingers. I also saw the Mood Seductive rabbit style that was pretty thin.
